Thanksgiving Pre-Orders

🦃 🥧

It's getting to be that time of year when we gather around friends and family to celebrate one another. At the Great Basin Community Food Co-op, we want your plans to go off without a hitch. Pre-order your Turkeys, Vegan Alternatives, and Local Nevada Grown Local Pumpkin Pies (GF & Vegan options available).
We bake all of our pies from scratch in-house using all local and organic ingredients 🧡 Huge thanks to our local pumpkin producers - Berri Baserri (Bordertown, NV), Avanzino Farms (Reno, NV), and Juniper Valley Ranch (Minden, NV).

Save the Harvest!
Adopt - A - Squash 🎃

Our Nevada farmers have had an incredibly bountiful winter squash season and we are happily helping them move this tremendous amount of food. Help save the harvest by ordering a 40-pound box of local winter squash for just $50!
The majority of the winter squash available this year are winter luxury pumpkins!  These pumpkins are a cheery, bright orange color, and have a distinctive netting covering the skin. They average 3-7 pounds each, making them the perfect size for one to two pies.
We also have smaller amounts of the following varieties and will include one or two other squash chosen at random for each box: Acorn Squash, Baby Bear Squash, Blue Hubbard Squash, Buttercup Squash, Butternut Squash, Delicata Squash, Futsu Squash, Honeynut Squash, Kabocha Squash, Spaghetti Squash, Sugar Pie Pumpkin, Winter Luxury Pie Pumpkin.

A few words of nutritional wisdom from our in-house nutritionist:

Winter squash refers to varieties of squash that are harvested once fully matured so that the skin is harder and the seeds are larger and tougher. They are called such because they store well and can be a good food source through long, cold winters and are best stored in a dark, dry, and cool location to preserve the flavor and freshness.
The leaves, tendrils, shoots, stems, flowers, seeds, and fruit from the squash are all edible. Winter squash is a good source of many beneficial nutrients, including vitamin C, vitamin B6, and fiber, as well as the minerals potassium and magnesium. As indicated by their dark yellow-orange insides, winter squash is rich in the carotenoid anti-oxidant beta-carotene, a precursor to Vitamin A.
Because Vitamin A is fat soluble, it is important to consume fat with vitamin A-containing foods in order to maximize its absorption. So, don’t be shy to put a hefty bit of butter, ghee, or coconut oil in with your beautiful winter squash preparations.  🧈 🥥 🎃

NEVADA'S OWN
(Smith Valley, NV)

🌸 🍓 Check out these familiar faces, you may recognize the McClure clan from our visit to Jacobs Berry Farm last year. They have been busy building a strawberry empire out in Smith Valley, NV.  Dan, Rachel, and their son, Atlas, have created a veggie and chicken paradise. Atlas's eggs are already on the co-op shelves.  His hens are fed organic feed and plenty of fresh homegrown fruits and veggies.  As you can see, their pup is feeling a bit shy.

Do you have a need for a large amount of compost for your farm and/or animals? Do you want to help reduce waste in your local food system? The Co-op is looking for a new person to pick up the produce refuse from our Kitchen and Produce Departments.  All of our veggie juice pulp and scraps are either certified organic or GBCFC-approved local.  We're looking for someone who can pick up approximately 6-7 rolling bins (pictured above) once per week. For more information about how much this pays along with other details, please reach out to . We hope to have someone begin by December 1, 2023.
