Grandma Fern’s Chocolate Pudding is finally up on the shelves. Organic fair trade cocoa gently folded into local Sandhill Dairy milk, Palomino Valley OG egg yolks, organic sugar, and Cup 4 Cup Gluten Free Flour Blend (you'd never know it was GF if we didn't tell you). Layered in a jar with organic whip cream that has just a hint of sweetness...because that’s how she did it and her pudding is one of the best you’ll ever try ❤️

Nevada's first certified organic hemp producer

has brought us this amazing body balm aka "jointment" which is CBD-infused for topical pain relief. Mark O'farrell, the local farmer behind Hungry Mother Organics [and now Sierra Nevada Hemp] sent us this image (below) to show how much hemp goes into a 2oz jar of the jointment, 300mg of CBD!! There are just 2 ingredients in this stuff: pure organic coconut oil, and full spectrum CBD from hemp, which is extracted directly into the oil by ultrasound!

Solar Powered Sunbeam Holiday Candles in Stock! Here's a quick list of why this company rules: The electricity in Sunbeam's shop is generated 100% by renewable energy, using solar, wind, and biomass sources. The candles are made with earth and human-conscious ingredients: lead-free 100% cotton wicks, 100% pure essential oils, environmentally friendly dyes, and locally/regionally sourced beeswax. Speaking of bees, they give back to those tiny essential beings who produce the wax by supporting the Pollinator Partnership, an organization using knowledge and action to strengthen global bee populations - maybe one of the most pressing agricultural concerns today. For those and many more reasons, we are proud to offer products from a company breaking the mold and operating with concern for so much more than just profits. An array of classic beeswax, votives, aromatherapy and manifestation candles in all shapes and sizes [including pine and clove for the holidays] can be found in the Food Shed Cafe and also on our main floor near the bakery case. Oh yeah, free co-op matches with any candle purchase!

2018:  A Year in Review with Board Secretary, Dominic Martin

 Hello co-op member-owners,
‘Tis the season to not only reflect upon the last year but to revel in the challenges that were overcome and the opportunities that allowed us to grow.  When I think of the co-op’s growth over the last year, I think of all the great additions, from our new cafe to a wider variety of local and regional direct products that can now be found on our shelves. I’m also reminded of our triple-bottom-line model; a model that not only drives
our business but encompasses social and environmental impact - a more conscious version of capitalism.
In the social sense of our growth, we’ve taken steps over the last year to bring our team members to a $15 per hour base wage. Something that many thought controversial (both socially and economically), but has turned out to not only drive the performance of our team but also be a sustainable business move.  As the first co-op in the nation to voluntarily set this standard, we can all applaud this truly impactful achievement.
Environmentally we’ve made many strides as well. Our
DROPP team has fine-tuned many of the moving parts in their processes to decrease the environmental impact of transporting local products, literally, from farm to table. Over the last year we’ve acquired a new truck to make deliveries more seamless.  A strategically located warehouse off of I-80 in Sparks, NV provides a closer drop (pun intended) point for many producers and farmers and serves as a more local and sustainable food distributor for ‘burners’ on the playa.
And last, but certainly not least, our financial business health is, well, healthy. For those member-owners that have been a part of the co-op family since its inception 13 years ago...or at least for a few years, you may remember a time when our business health became a little rocky.  Amber Sallaberry, our GM, and her tirelessly devoted team have worked so hard to bring us back to a place where we are enjoying the fruits of our labor -- the future looks bright!  We are looking forward to continued growth and improvement on all fronts in 2019, and we could not do it without the support of all of our wonderful member-owners.
Have a wonderful holiday season,
Dominic Martin, GBCFC Board Secretary

Its already that time of year - our supply of Local Turmeric & Baby Ginger is just about gone! Ray and Virginia Johnson of Custom Gardens in Silver Springs (Nevada's first certified organic farm!) bring us these special micro-climate beauties for just a matter of weeks each year. Both roots of course are lauded for their anti-inflammatory powers. Turmeric is also a known antioxidant and ginger is great for calming nausea or morning sickness. If you're sad to see them go until next year, the good news is both roots do well frozen, so you can stock up now and save it for your new years juicin'. Thank you Custom Gardens!

We are SO EXCITED to announce that we have the first NEVADA PASTURE RAISED CHICKEN on our shelves from Kennedy Ranch located just outside of Elko in Lamoille, NV! If you don’t know, Nevada does not currently have any poultry processing facilities available to producers who are raising less than 20,000 birds.  However, the USDA has an exemption for on-farm poultry processors (under which Kennedy Ranch operates with fewer than 20,000 birds).  Their practices are consistent with the rules of this USDA exemption, along with the state regulations.  Not to mention that they are inspected by both.
Kennedy Ranch is a 4th generation operation that started in 1860 in Elko County and moved to their current location in 1930. In 2008 Sue Kennedy took over the operation full time and switched the beef production from conventional to direct sale grass fed/grass finished beef. In 2012 they built their processing facility and began producing pasture-raised chickens. Sue decided to raise a bird called the Freedom Ranger, as opposed to the conventional CornishX [a genetically modified bird]. The Freedom Rangers take longer to raise because they grow at a natural rate and the whole bird develops equally. They are natural-born foragers and thrive in the open pasture. This natural diet is presently supplemented with a grain feed that is not certified organic - this is due to the challenge of getting organic feed to the ranch in a cost-effective manner. We are currently looking into options for Kennedy Ranch to get organic feed out there and they are willing to switch if we can make that happen.  We will keep everyone informed as things progress.  I don't know about you but I would rather eat a truly pastured local hen any day over a cooped up "factory free range raised organic hen" any day of the week.  Happier hens = healthier hens and Nevada raised means more economic impact for the producers in our very own state.  Look for these birds in the freezer section next to all of our other local, organic & grass fed/finished meats!
