All January, Organic Fair Trade Bananas are just .69/lb!! Sure, thats a *velvety* deal but what is Fair Trade? Over the last few decades, the Fair Trade organization has worked to increase the price paid to small growers, encourage a living wage, support workers rights, and require health & safety practices like prohibiting hazardous pesticides. Given the conditions of most of the global food industry, these are great first steps - but the movement has a long way to go before every farmer and agriculture worker knows true food justice. One easy way we can all ensure that dial continues to turn is to simply buy good bananas - vote with your dollar as they say. For staple crops coming from such distant regions, we rely on Fair Trade Certified to ensure we are supporting our fellow humans as well as the environment. The GBCFC is proud to push that movement forward by purchasing the most sustainable, ethical, organic bananas we can possibly find! Run Run Run down now and grab a bunch or two!
Check out the beautiful documentary at http://beyondtheseal.com for an inside look at the lives of the workers who grow, harvest, and package your bananas.

Several weeks back, the farm bill was passed by both the Senate and the House and was signed by the POTUS on Dec 20th. The bill calls for $428 billion over five years to be spent - of which $326 billion will go to the SNAP program, $99 billion to Agriculture Risk Coverage, Price Loss Coverage, and Dairy Margin Coverage... and finally just $3.5 billion going to Trade, Miscellaneous, Horticulture, Research & Extension, Energy, Forestry, Revenues, Rural Development, and Credit. The most exciting part is that this farm bill officially reclassifies hemp for commercial use in the United States. Hemp became illegal in 1937 when the Marijuana Tax Act was passed due to its close relation with Cannabis Sativa (known as Marijuana) but unlike Cannabis, Hemp contains no THC - the active chemical in Cannabis that produces the euphoric high. Previous to this outlawing, hemp was used to make medicine, textiles, and paper. The first drafts of the Declaration of Independence were actually written on hemp paper! A study by the USDA in 1919 found that 1 acre of hemp can produce the same amount of paper that 4-10 acres of trees could provide - and hemp can do it in 6 months whereas a tree will take 10-20 years! Hemp is also a dynamic accumulator which means the plants establish long roots very quickly, gathering macro and micro nutrients from deep in the soil. The nutrients are stored away so when the plant are done flowering and die, they release thee nutrients back into the soil at a shallower level, making them accessible for shallow root crops to access them. On that fact alone, hemp could single-handedly change our food system and planet for the better. Imagine cleaner produced clothes, papers, and medicine - all while improving the soil and ecology of the ecosystems in which they are grown. Three cheers for hemp! Hemp, Hemp, Hooray!

Rick Lattin in the field, Fallon NV, 2016
A brief Lattin Farms history:
In the 1860s, Lattin Farms, now on the corner of McLean and Sheckler Roads, actually sat on the southfork of the Carson River. In fact, the river ran within 100 yards southwest of where the Old-Fashioned Roadside Produce Stand now sits, underneath the neighbor’s house. The Wagon Trail came right by this property in the mid-1800s. The Lattin Family has been farming the Lahontan Valley for five generations. Since 1977, the family has pioneered the production of red raspberries in Nevada. Surprisingly, the warm desert days and cool, high-altitude nights allow the full flavor of fruits like berries and melons to thrive. Such conditions have made the Fallon area regionally-famous for the Hearts O’ Gold Cantaloupe, which has an unparalleled sweetness. Lattin Farms has been selling produce since the mid-50s and the Old-Fashioned Roadside Produce Stand has been in operation since 1989. Locals as well as hundreds of out-of-town visitors anticipate its opening every year. The profile of the American Farm, and certainly one in the middle of the desert, has changed dramatically since George Lattin settled in the Lahontan Valley 90 years ago. His legacy has invested time, sweat, heart and soul into cultivating the earth and preserving some traditions of American Farming. Today, George’s great grandson, Rick, along with his wife, BAnn, and their family, are still very much involved in growing food to live for their family and others.
You may have wandered through their world famous corn maze or enjoyed some of BAann's jam. SUPERFOOD LATTES AND BULLETPROOF COFFEE!
Superfood lattes are delicious alternatives to their caffeinated counterparts. The Food Shed Cafe is now making 4 varieties daily with your choice of Local Sandhill Dairy Whole Milk, Organic Straus Whole Milk, Organic Coconut Milk, or Organic Almond Milk. The flavors are Beetroot (with Organic Cinnamon and Organic Beetroot Powder), Golden Milk (with Organic Turmeric), Matcha (with Organic Encha Matcha Powder), and Starlight (made with Chocolate-Mint Spirullina Powder). All sweetened with Organic Maple Syrup, and full of antioxidant, anti-inflammation powers. Coffee drinkers! Don't miss the bulletproof coffee latte - made with your choice of milk, grass-fed butter, and MCT (medium-chain triglycerides) oil, this mixture of high quality beans and powerful fats is renown for increasing focus while curbing hunger - great if you're one of those hard workin types that doesn't get a bite before 3pm [we have a few working behind the scenes here]. At first it may seem odd to drop a chunk of butter into a hot cup of joe, but its jam-packed with healthy fats and fat-soluble vitamins. Studies show that combining MCTs with other liquids increases its fat-burning effects. Caffeine also increases your body’s ability to burn fat for energy. The fats from the butter also slow the absorption of the caffeine, giving you a gentler, steadier dose of energy throughout the morning. have we sold you on this one yet? All you area members should have just received a mailer with a coupon for both these beverages, good through the end of January for $1 a superfood or bulletproof latte - stop in and warm up or kick your day off strong!
