All January, Organic Fair Trade Bananas are just .69/lb!! Sure, thats a *velvety* deal but what is Fair Trade? Over the last few decades, the Fair Trade organization has worked to increase the price paid to small growers, encourage a living wage, support workers rights, and require health & safety practices like prohibiting hazardous pesticides. Given the conditions of most of the global food industry, these are great first steps - but the movement has a long way to go before every farmer and agriculture worker knows true food justice. One easy way we can all ensure that dial continues to turn is to simply buy good bananas - vote with your dollar as they say. For staple crops coming from such distant regions, we rely on Fair Trade Certified to ensure we are supporting our fellow humans as well as the environment. The GBCFC is proud to push that movement forward by purchasing the most sustainable, ethical, organic bananas we can possibly find! Run Run Run down now and grab a bunch or two!
Check out the beautiful documentary at http://beyondtheseal.com for an inside look at the lives of the workers who grow, harvest, and package your bananas.
We want to thank EVERYONE for their support in 2018. We got to put a lot of local and organic product into the hands of community partners and Co-op members. As we look back on the year and assemble our 2018 Annual Report [coming in February], there are a few people we would like to shout out to for buying the most local and organic food! The top 5 highest DROPP purchasers: Butter & Salt, Homegrown Gastro Pub, Laughing Planet, Coffeebar, and South Creek Pizza Co. Also a huge hats off to the top three purchasers of LOCAL produce and products: Campo Reno, Liberty Food & Wine Exchange, and The Union. These community partners all stood out and made our 2018 year one for the books. This love for local and organic produce and products has made what we do possible everyday. Thank you again to these businesses for loving their farmer.
Introducing our top 5 "high desert island" books: Life Changing Foods and Liver Rescue from Celery Juice Champion and Medical Medium Anthony William, Nourishing Broth and Nourishing Traditions from Sally Fallon [renown author and president of the Weston Price Foundation], and The Art of Fermentation by Sandor Ellix Katz. These eye-opening, wellness-enhancing [some may even say mind-blowing] texts are packed with all the stuff you never learned in school on the secret powers of food! Seasoned kitchen pros and food newbs alike will benefit from these approachable texts. Learn, heal, and be well! Find them at the registers or just around the tree in center-store!
The Vegan Cream Cheese Avocado Sushi is back!!
Months ago we had to put production of these on hold due to a shortage of ripe avocados, and subbed in the Faux Salmon & Cucumber Sushi to hold you over. Avocado prices typically jump in September after the California growing season ends, but for a few weeks in December, they were nearly impossible for us to get. This was due to a growers strike in Michoacán, Mexico over a wage disagreement with the packers & distributors. The strike sent guac-less shockwaves through the US market and sparked a lot of conversation. As we continue to face the challenges of an ever-growing population and an increasingly strained food supply, it becomes more critical to shift our efforts to local/regional production and sourcing. We may also find ourselves returning to the ancient human tradition of seasonal eating. Not only does this practice align us more with the inherently sensible cycles of nature, but it puts way less strain on the environment and humanity. Yes, rewiring the expectations of the consumer mind is a huge hurdle to clear, but we are committed to working within these limitations [reflected in our prepared foods offerings year round], and hope that these ideas and practices continue to permeate. These worker strikes are also another good reminder to support Fair Trade Certified growers, which our produce department sources from any time they are available.
...food for thought as you enjoy your avocado sushi!
