A FEW WORDS OF GRATITUDE FROM BOARD MEMBER DAVID FUNK

"As I sit here thinking about the message that I would like to share in this letter, giant flakes of snow are falling from the sky and covering the ground in a white blanket. Hello winter!  Many of us have recently celebrated Thanksgiving. This happens to be my favorite holiday of all. Sharing a meal with my family and friends makes my heart sing. Telling stories filled with laughs and sometimes, shedding tears, is something that feeds my soul.
I like separating the word into two separate words: Thanks and Giving. This concept of taking stock of our blessings and gathering together to celebrate these bounties in our lives is at the center of the celebration of Thanksgiving. This practice of giving thanks doesn’t have to stop there though. Most of us know the importance of eating a healthy and balanced diet but did you also know that having an attitude of gratitude can have astonishing results on our health and wellbeing? Studies surrounding gratitude have shown that having an increased sense of appreciation can strengthen our immune system. Increasing our sense of appreciation can also lead to lower blood pressure, better sleep and stronger relationships.
As we transition from fall to winter, we are offered countless opportunities to continue with our thanks-giving. Whether we celebrate the Winter Solstice and the return of the light, Christmas, the Jewish New Year (Rosh Hashanah) or any other tradition, we can share our feelings of abundance.  We might choose to invite those needier into our homes. We may choose to help serve food at our local shelter or food bank or create a new tradition within our own family gatherings.
Last year, my mom had place cards at each person’s seat on which she expressed specific thanks for each of the guests. On another occasion, my aunt had placed pumpkins in the center of the table and had Sharpies available to let the guests express their gratefulness right there on the centerpiece.  But let’s not make the holidays be the only reason to express our gratefulness. As we make our journey toward the end of this year and transition to the year ahead, perhaps we could create new ways and traditions to express our thankfulness. We could set an alarm bell on our phone that rings once a day to remind us to stop what we are doing and become aware of all that is around us. Perhaps it’s a Sticky Note on the refrigerator or bathroom mirror with a reminder of what we are grateful for. Maybe it’s hanging notes or ribbons of gratitude on the branches of a tree in our yard. It might be a daily entry of thanks-giving in a journal.
Whatever our practice may be, perhaps this is the year that we take the Daze out of the Holidaze and work on lowering our blood pressure and boosting our immune system through gratitude and thanks-giving.  A slice of the Co-op’s, home–made vegan pumpkin pie helps too.
With deep appreciation,
David Funk

At this time of year when the snow starts to fly and the ground freezes, we turn to our other favorite food hub, Tahoe Food Hub.  These guys are a non-profit food hub that aggregates produce, eggs, dairy, and other products from farmers located in the foothills of the western side of the Sierra mountains. Sourcing from amazing local farms in areas like Auburn, Grass Valley, Tahoe Food Hub aims to bring local and organic foods to Lake Tahoe and surrounding areas. We have been getting some amazing produce from farms like 24carrotfarm, Shared Abundance and Super Tuber Farm. While we love supporting our own local farmers as much as we can, it is great to be supporting farmers from the other side of the food shed!

Hey Reno! The Pesticide Free Parks group NEEDS YOUR HELP! The city needs to understand how much we LOVE our current 12 Pesticide Free Parks and that we would like them to expand the Pesticide Free Parks program. We are asking The City of Reno to switch to non-toxic maintenance strategies for the 1400 other non-park public spaces in the City of Reno, which are maintained by the Public Works Department. As they consider the budget for next year, the city needs to see that this is something that a large number of people in the area really want, and that just like our wonderful city officials, we are all committed to the health and wellness of our great communities.  For the benefit of our children, our pets, the native ecology within these regions and last but not least, the lifeblood of the area - our watershed/foodshed. Pesticides do end up in the greater Northern NV watershed/foodshed no matter where they are sprayed.  We are asking that everyone who cares about this important issue WRITE A BRIEF EMAIL TO OUR CITY OFFICIALS to let them know!  Or, read this recent feedback from the City Council and consider attending:
"We've received a number of constituent concerns relating to pesticide spraying and pesticide free parks. Please be advised that although this is not agendized for a future agenda at this time, Mayor Schieve has requested an informational meeting, to be facilitated by Vice Mayor Duerr, to provide an educational informational session with our Directors from Public Works and Parks/Rec Departments.  Hope to see you there!
