Why Are Some People Taking Irish Sea Moss In Place of a Multivitamin?
Sea moss, or Irish sea moss, or heck, Chondrus crispus... is a red algae that is considered somewhat of a superfood. It's a rich source of omega-3s, antioxidants, fiber, vitamins A, C, E, and K, as well as riboflavin (B2) and cobalamin (B12). It’s also packed with minerals like calcium, magnesium, potassium, zinc, selenium, iodine, iron, phosphorus, manganese, and sulfur.
This potent tide pool inhabitant grows year-round, with as many as 336 different species growing in certain reefs! Here are some potential benefits to supplementing with this naturally biodiverse, sustainable superfood:
- Supports healthy digestion - The fiber content is a great prebiotic, providing support for the gut microbiome. The mucilaginous consistency lends to gut-healing by fortifying the mucous membranes in the body.
- Immune system support – Contains antioxidants and phytochemicals that help to reduce inflammation and support immune function.
- Blood sugar regulation – The antioxidant fucoxanthin may help with insulin sensitivity by promoting glucose uptake. The fiber content helps to slow the absorption of food and uptake of glucose into the blood.
- Heart health support and inflammation reduction - omega-3 fatty acids help reduce inflammation in the body and support heart health by lowering triglycerides and promoting healthy cholesterol levels.
- As with other sea vegetables, sea moss is an excellent source of iodine, a key element in the production of thyroid hormones, and can be supportive to the thyroid. That being said, too much iodine can be dysregulating for an overactive or imbalanced thyroid.
- There are several ways you can take the moss: capsules, powders, gummies, and gel form. Sea moss gel happens when the dried algae is mixed with water, resulting in a consistency similar to applesauce. It can be taken by the spoonful or mixed into smoothies, yogurt bowls, oatmeal, or any other food.
True Sea Moss is a new line of gels available in Original, Elderberry, Cherry, Blue Spirulina, and 5-in-1 Immune Support, all of which are 15% off this month!
Timberline Flower Farm, Reno NV
Meet the newest local producers: Reno's own Timberline Flower Farm. Kim, the owner, has always had a love of creative expression in a garden. Some of her earliest memories were harvesting Swiss chard with her grandpa. With the focus of building stronger community and connection to nature, her farm has grown into a tranquil sanctuary as well. She is in her 5th season growing flowers on her farm and enjoys hosting many types of workshops for people to comfortably explore creative outlets like wreath making and botanical printing.
Timberline no longer rototills their beds and only uses organic fertilizers (mainly Dr. Earth) every 3-4 weeks, spraying compost tea at the same rate. They are planning to use SCD BioAg as a nutrient supplement applied every 3 weeks and MaxSea which is a seaweed nutrient as well. They are working to increase their BRIX level to reduce any use of outside products by adding alfalfa to the beds this year. They have also planted geranium to help with thrips after learning recently that the thrips will feed on these rather than climbing into the dahlias. In the early spring they add Full Circle Boost and spray Punch once a month. They add nematodes, lacewing and lady bugs for pest control as well as garlic and onions interplanted where possible.
Timberline Flower Farm is now a very special place to share and has roughly half an acre of flower gardens. Kim’s flowers are available weekly in the growing season as a farm membership. She was one of the first farms in the area to sell bouquets through DoorDash and loves working with local florists who support local flowers, as well as DIY brides that want a simple wedding. Visits to the farm are by appointment. Kim loves sharing the beauty and has found many guests giggling joyfully in the fields talking to the flowers.
We Need Your Help!
