A Treasure Trove of Locally Grown Produce!
Article by Philip MooreGBCFC Local Food Director
It is peak season for local food, which means that we have an abundance of delicious local produce. If you want to try local food for the first time or want to celebrate your existing passion for local produce, now is the time! And speaking of time, look at the clockwork of local produce surrounding John Lee to see our beautiful and abundant local produce.
Sprouting out of John’s ears is the organic chard from Loni, Rob, and Daniel Holley. You can just make out some of their crazy abundance of tomatoes through the crook in John’s right arm.
At about one o’clock on the clock dial, you will see Garlic scapes from Garrett Menghini at Ripcord Farms. His beautiful potatoes (that will be featured in a Foodshed dish soon) are just off John’s right elbow.
Just under the scapes you might spot Bill Mewaldt’s own varietal of garlic. So good!
At two o’clock you will see both the incredible melons from Emperor Scott Goodpasture, who is truly ruling Northern Nevada with his abundance of shishito peppers (try ‘em roasted – amazing!).
At three o’clock on the clock dial, you will see cabbage from Gary Romano (also at 10 o’clock), who is also producing organic radishes and greens despite being washed out at one point by the torrential rains. His arugula is to die for!
At four o’clock you will see some of the sprouts that Kayla, Brenton, and their newest family member continue to produce from Little Frog Farm.
At five o’clock you will see some of the wonderful herbs we have been receiving from the Reno Food System’s Park Farm – what a wonderful community effort! They will be delivering whole dill for your pickling needs soon!
John is happily holding a bouquet of flowers from our newest local producer – Kim Lundeen at Timberline Flower Farm. Wow!
If you look carefully around seven o’clock, you will see some of the lemon cucumbers from Ray Johnson, who also is “up to ears” in the yellow crookneck squash showing at ten o’clock.
Prema Farms, which is truly at its peak, is well represented by their daikon radishes at nine o’clock. They have also been delivering a wonderful variety of organic salad greens, herbs, greens, carrots, and peppers (including the wickedly hot Aji Rico pepper coming soon!). Go Courtney, David and team!
And last, but not least, look for the incredible bunches of carrots and beets from Jim Davenport at eleven o’clock. He is having a great season!
And wouldn’t you know it, we could not fit all the current local produce in the picture! Zucchini and Pickling Cucumbers are coming soon from Doug Avanzino! If you are planning to pickle, buy a case at a time and get your other pickling supplies at the coop, including whole dill, cases of jars, sea salt and anything else you need!
Organic salad greens continue to come in from the Desert Farming Initiative - thanks to Jill Moe and the team.
Dan, Rachel, and Atlas McClure at Nevada’s Own continue to deliver beautiful edible flowers and are now providing some local strawberries (super sweet – you have to try them).
Organic mushrooms from Mountain Mushrooms - Have you tried a sampler box? Thanks, Nate, for the beautiful shrooms!
A summer squash medley, eggplant, and zucchini from Jeannie Damonte at Sterling Farms. Her farm is just getting rolling!
It is TIME to show your farmer some love by buying ALL their beautiful produce while enjoying the best produce that Northern Nevada has to offer!
Flash Sale 🏃🏻♀️ ⚡️on local Shishito Peppers from Pioneer Farm (Fallon, NV)!!
The season is very short for these awesomely delicious peppers! We typically sell these for $11.99 a pound, they will be on a flash sale for $8.99 a pound through next Sunday, August 24th!
Have you ever had blistered Shishito peppers? The process is simple. You can use tongs or skewers to place your shishitos over an open flame, much like you would a marshmallow while camping. You can do this in your house if you have gas appliances, and you can also do this outside or while camping. Once you roast each pepper, put them in a bowl and add a healthy drizzle of olive oil and a generous pinch of sea salt, then enjoy. 😋 - hands-down one of the best snacks of the summer. 🙌🏽 🤤

Navigating the food industry can be overwhelming, and many of us have experienced the burden of making the right food choices to feed ourselves and our families. The challenge of making proper food choices is no different when determining what to feed the feline and canine members of our family as well. Just as we care what we put into our bodies, it is important to be informed and aware of what goes into the bodies of our pets as well.
We have recently introduced the Orijen pet food line into our co-op with these furry kin in mind. Orijen is considered one of the best options available when it comes to dry food, and several factors go into this determination.
Orijen is higher in protein than most other brands, at 38-40% protein content. Much research has gone into the “biologically appropriate” composition of this pet food, meaning that it reflects the diet that they would naturally eat in the wild and is aligned with their digestive anatomy. Cats and dogs have short digestive tracts, indicating that they are designed to digest protein and fats more optimally, and are less equipped to break down fibrous plants and grains. The high carbohydrate content of many conventional dog food brands makes them dangerous for the majority of animals and contributes to obesity, diabetes, and other health issues.
Additionally, Orijen follows a “whole prey” philosophy, utilizing the whole animal in their formulations, which include the nutrient-dense portions like offal, marrow, and cartilage. These pet food recipes are made of 85-95% animal products, so there is little room for fillers that provide no nutritional benefit and disrupt the balance of your pet’s health.
Lastly, Orijen gives special consideration to its ingredient sourcing, which involves a rigorous supplier audit and a detailed ingredient traceability system. They work exclusively with farmers, ranchers, and fisheries that have demonstrated an ongoing commitment to quality, food safety, sustainability, and communication.
In support of you supporting your pets, all Orijen pet foods and treats are 15% off from August 20 – September 16.
