Nevada is one of 27 states in the nation to submit a bill for GMO labeling!!!
This week, Label GMO Nevada, co-sponsored by Co-op members Kiki Corbin, certified traditional naturopath, and Christopher Lunn, both from Carson City, received news that Assemblyman Aizley (D) from Las Vegas, submitted a bill request (BDR 955) for labeling GMO foods in our state. Assemblyman Wheeler (R) from Douglas County is co-sponsor. We are thrilled to have bi-partisan support as this is about food and everyone eats food.
Now that we have a bill many things have to happen quickly. In case you are not familiar with the legislative process, a bill draft goes to the state attorneys (we submitted the model bill that 27 other states have submitted from the Coalition of States for Labeling GMO Foods. Then it is assigned to a committee (most likely Health). Then to the full Assembly. Then it goes to the Senate to a committee, then to the full Senate. All this has to happen within 3 1/2 months! It is going to take a miracle and a lot of work for this to pass. I am very optimistic we can do it together.
So, how can you get involved? Here is the list of committees we are forming. You might consider volunteering with a group of friends so you have social time together while you are working. It makes it a double win.
1. Volunteer committee: a chair and at least 5 volunteers (need some in Las Vegas, too). This committee will funnel volunteers to the various committees according to people's skills and preferences.
2. Media committee: One chair and 3 volunteers: someone who is experienced at on line media and/or news media. Our website has been started: www.labelGMONevada.org. and needs to be developed further in connection with the Resources Committee. We have support of the major national organic associations who will send out email blasts for us.
3. Fund raising: A chair and at least 3 volunteers to manage other volunteers to find sponsors for our organization. I am finding this to be pretty easy work. People are really enthusiastic about the issue and want to help. It is also good advertising for them. We have a sponsor page created already. The Co-op is our first sponsor!
4. Farming and Ranching: We need a chair and 5 volunteers to organize the Ag community, both north and south. Christopher Lunn is doing research on state Ag statistics and will be working with this committee. We need sponsorship from these groups.
5. Health committee: a chair and 3 volunteers to organize the holistic health community and the allopathic health community to endorse (and maybe sponsor) this bill.
6. Activist committee: A chair and 5 volunteers to organize phone calls, emails, and letter writing, petitions, setting up public talks and movie viewing, and testimony at hearings. I am finding this to be a lot of fun. I am meeting the most dedicated people with good hearts. I will be active with this committee.
7. Resources committee: A chair to head up organizing educational materials. I am presently on the National Committee and need someone (maybe a college student or professor?) to take my place. There is a lot of resources nationwide from the campaigns in the past two years.
As you can see there are lots of areas you can get involved in. I am trusting in Grace to bring this together in a synchronized way so all benefit, including our legislators.
Last item, but NOT least: we need you to send out an email to your friends and family to contact our representatives to support this BDR 955. Please go to www.labelGMONevada.org and opt in to the email list. We will be sending out news and action alerts. We especially need to reach people in Las Vegas as they are the biggest (2 million) constituents in the state. Do you know anyone there?
I want to thank you all ahead of time. If it weren't for the heart of this co-op, which is the membership who supports healthy, pure food, and the farmers/ranchers who raise it, we wouldn't be able to succeed. We have reached a tipping point in awareness and it all started and continues because of you. Many blessings on our endeavors. Please, if there ever was a time your efforts are needed, it is now. Please email me at or call me at . Email will be easier to coordinate as I do not have an assistant... ah,there is another volunteer job!
Much love,
Kiki Corbin

Learn how to make traditional Korean Kimchi this Sunday March 3rd at 12:00pm with Shin Hickey
Kimchi (or kimchee) is loaded with vitamins A, B, and C, but its biggest benefit may be in its “healthy bacteria” called lactobacilli, found in fermented foods like kimchi and yogurt. This good bacteria helps with digestion, plus it seems to help stop and even prevent yeast infections, according to a recent study. And more good news: Some studies show fermented cabbage has compounds that may prevent the growth of cancer. All events are free and open to the public, please RSVP to save your seat.
