Foodshed Cafe Last Day of Service Monday November 10th
In April 2024, we reopened the Foodshed Cafe. We did this because of the weekly requests we received from our loyal member-owners while the cafe was shut down during the pandemic. The Foodshed Cafe is the ONLY eatery in Reno buying beef, eggs, pork, veggies, tea, sauces, and more from LOCAL FARMERS, RANCHERS & PRODUCERS. We are one of the only restaurants in Reno that doesn't source anything from US Foods or Sysco. The ingredients that we use are certified organic and seed oil-free. Last year, the co-op and cafe combined grew local purchases by 22%, putting nearly $750,000 back into the local food economy.
The Cafe wasn't designed to make the co-op a lot of money; it was designed to support the local food system and serve our patrons truly healthy, nutrient-dense food. That said, we were doing pretty well with both until the first week of May 2025, when the Arlington Bridge closed. Immediately within that first week, we saw a 20%+ decline in sales... not just in the Cafe, the entire co-op.
As the weeks went on, that negative sales growth number grew. Our incredibly loyal customers would call and email to let us know that, due to a multitude of street closures in the neighborhood, they couldn't figure out how to get to the co-op! Between the Arlington Bridge closure, downtown special events, other City of Reno Traffic closures, and utility construction, even our own crew was having a hard time navigating to work.
33.7% of our membership is located on the other side of the Arlington Bridge... a few years back, the bridge closed for a month, and sales dropped nearly 30%. Fortunately, the sales came back as soon as the bridge reopened, but again, that was only a month... this time, the bridge will be closed for over a year, with an anticipated reopening date of Summer 2026. We've spoken with other small businesses in the area who have been impacted more significantly than we have... some folks have had to close up shop. 😢 Despite everything, we know that we are lucky to be here, and our hearts go out to everyone impacted at this time.
Before you get upset and start calling/emailing the City or RTC, please know that we have already been in communication with both groups, and they have tried to be as helpful as possible. The Arlington Bridge was structurally unsound and needed repairs, and these guys are doing their jobs to make our Biggest Little City safe and beautiful. It's unfortunate, but it's just a part of reality, and there is no one to blame or be mad at.
We are grateful to continue opening our doors each day. ⛪️ 💕
The Foodshed Cafe's last day of service (for now) is Monday, November 10th. Our downstairs grocery store will remain open, and the Co-op's basement Kitchen will start making warm burritos and coffee again every day beginning Thursday, November 13th. We will also have our soups, baked goods, and our full grab-and-go selection on the main floor.
Thank you to everyone who has gone to ridiculous lengths to come shop with us all summer and fall. Thank you doesn't even really scratch the surface. 🫶🏻
We are the last independent grocery store in Reno and the last grocer supporting small to medium-sized local and regional direct producers. If you can, please choose us for your regular and holiday shopping. ♥️
Most of the closures and construction in the neighborhood are complete, and you can access us from EVERYWHERE but the Arlington Bridge. Keystone to California Avenue is wide open again, and so is most of downtown. 🙌🏽
