NEW Cookies 🍪 Probiotic Foods 🦠 Specialty Cheeses 🧀 & More!

We’ve been doing massive inventory overhauls and resets ever since the beginning of summer. This past week, we got to dig into cookies, yogurt, and probiotic foods! We analyzed all the data, removed the items that don’t sell, put them all on the clearance rack, and refreshed the entire sets. The whoopee pies and lacto-fermented pickle bags are out of this world!  We also found a new magnesium deodorant stick in compostable cardboard packaging, new Yerba Mate flavors, Fermented pre-and probiotic soda pops, and some amazingly delicious lacto fermented pickles and veggies 🥒

Specialty cheese is stocked up and refilled with all of your favorites like Cowgirl Creamery’s MT Tam, Marin French Cheese’s Petit Camembert, Point Reyes Quinta Sift Ripened Cheese, and so many others 👻🤤

Have you ever heard the phrase “health begins in the gut?”  This illustrates that much of the body’s fundamental well-being (including immune function & mental, cardiovascular, and metabolic health) is tied to the health of the digestive system and its microbiome.  A healthy microbiome is determined by the quantity and diversity of bacteria in specific areas of the digestive tract.
One way to support a healthy microbiome is to consume probiotics, and I don’t just mean supplemental probiotics.  There are a variety of foods rich in probiotics, such as yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, and lacto-fermented vegetables, that are likely more effective at supporting gut health because, in addition to beneficial bacteria, they provide additional nutrients, antioxidants, and fiber.  These components help protect the probiotics from the acidity of stomach acid and the harsh conditions of the digestive tract until they reach the large intestine.  Additionally, the fiber content provides prebiotic fuel for the probiotic bacteria.
The nutrients within whole foods have a synergistic relationship with each other that can be difficult to replicate in supplement form, as many micronutrients—various vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants—work together to promote the absorption and efficacy of one another, supporting overall health.  Incorporating a cup of kefir with your breakfast, a scoop of sauerkraut with lunch, or a small snack of yogurt provides a nice dose of food-based probiotics and all the benefits that come with them.
In addition to some of our current products, there’s a sweet selection of new probiotic-rich foods at the co-op:

  • Yogurts – a variety of plant-based and dairy options, including Greek-style Cocojune and Forager, Coconut Cult 16oz Seasonal, 0% and 2% Fage, Nancy’s Plain Greek, Norr Organics Skyr (whole and nonfat)
  • Sauerkraut, Kimchi, and Pickles from Brit’s Ferments
  • Barrel-aged lacto-fermented I.P.O. and Spicy Pickles
  • Black Market Kimchi- made with black garlic and sesame
  • Bare Naked Kimchi- simply mild essence of carrot, onion, and dill
  • Golden Kraut- traditional turmeric sauerkraut
  • Point Reyes Pickles (Wild West Ferments) - certified organic and lacto-fermented in oak barrels, which adds a special crunch and flavor.
  • Nira Fermented Sodas (Biotic Ferments) - made with fermented coconut blossom nectar, these certified organic drinks are sweetened with fruit juice and/or date syrup and flavored with botanical extracts
