Wrapping Up 2020 and Looking Forward
Letter to our Member-Owners
Dear Members:
As we head into the new year, we can honestly say (and we’re sure you agree), 2020 has been a wild ride for us all! With our member-owners and our amazing staff supporting us, we weathered the Covid-19 pandemic, a year of social and political unrest, a severe fire season, and major supply chain disruptions. The pandemic required us to close our beloved DROPP Food Hub along with our Food Shed Cafe. And sadly, we were never able to open our new salad bar as planned. Despite it all, our grocery business remained strong and stable thanks to you! So … thank you!
In an era where corporate giants are flourishing, and small businesses are failing, we are more committed than ever to strengthening and sustaining our community-owned cooperative business. We’re a business whose mission it is to promote our local food system and to pay local producers fair prices for their goods, while serving as an access point for wholesome, nutritious food; a place where you know our buying guidelines have your back and where you are so much more than a number!
You’ve also been a great constant in this year of great change. So, with an eye to the future and a steadily growing co-op, we are using 2021 to reevaluate our member-owner benefits so that going into 2022 we are more aligned with industry best practice and you have more stake in the success of your co-op. Just as in any business, we may ‘try on a few different hats’ and a few different benefit solutions to see what best fits our community while allowing the co-op to thrive. One of these options is moving towards patronage dividends, where the more you shop, the more you earn (as long as the co-op is profitable). Over the next year, the co-op’s leadership team and board of directors will evaluate this option and others. During the evaluation period, the following owner benefits will be in place.
2021 Member-Owner Benefits:
- You are part of an alternative economic model and get to own a grocery store with your community!
- You directly support local producers and keep more money in the local economy, which is Rad!
- 10% off your entire purchase once per quarter (4 times per year) – on a day of your choosing
- 10-20% off on special order purchases of case quantities, which makes stocking up or indulging in those goodies you really enjoy way more affordable
- Periodic member coupons (value to vary)
- Be part of the democratic process and vote in board elections
- Coming in January - Online shopping through WebCart, which provides full access to all the items in the store, including sale prices
- We're hoping we'll be able to reopen our Food Shed Cafe and new salad bar later in the year
- More local goods
- Announcement on 2022 member-owner benefits plan
Thank you so much for your continued support! We wish you all a Happy New Year!
