HAVE YOU HERD?
Doug Avanzino is our newest Local rancher! You've probably carved up a few of his Halloween Jack-0-lanterns before, and likely driven right past his grazing cattle at the East end of Mill St before. The Avanzinos have been farming in Reno for 3 generations. They practice a technique that leaves crop residue in place, covering the soil from wind blown erosion and evaporation. This technique fends off salination and desertification, all the while recycling plant matter back into the soil. Their 300 acres are managed in part by their cattle who’s grazing rotation encourages eating weeds and the spread of soil-enriching manure.
In the coming weeks, keep your eyes peeled for Local Avanzino Farms Grass-fed & Grass-finished beef in the store. If you're looking to invest, quarter and eighth Avanzino cows are available to order through DROPP. While the beef is priced a flat rate (about 6 dollars a pound), DROPP will accommodate cut preferences within reason.
LOCAL FARM DFI NOW CERTIFIED ORGANIC!!
Congratulations to Reno's Desert Farming Initiative (DFI), who are now CERTIFIED ORGANIC!! If you've ever wondered about those fields and greenhouses you pass on I80 west, that's DFI. An important part of their mission is sustainable agriculture practices, and since they were already farming using organic methods, they decided to get certified. They have also stepped up In response to the large demand for more Local Organic produce for our region, and will continue to increase awareness through demonstration of high desert vegetable production. Find a variety of their crops in our produce department regularly, including these Organic Purple Top Turnips!
