SATURDAY SEEDLING SALE & ORGANIC GRADUATION BOUQUETS!!

The annual Seedling Sale is TOMORROW!
Don't miss this! It's our biggest event of the year, with the whole block shut down, featuring dozens of local & regional farmers and vendors. Sale opens at 7:30 and runs to 12 noon. Last year many farmers sold out by 10 so they are bringing a bulked up supply this year! Local seedlings are ideal as they are already acclimated to our climate [and of course lovingly raised by your watershed neighbors]. The Co-op and the Food Shed Cafe will be slinging free samples all morning, and will have a street level booth with locally roasted coffee, fresh juices, and our famously delicious baked goods.
See you there!

Last year's event in full swing

If you're one of the first 213 people to shop the Seedling Sale, you'll have a free flat box to haul your little guys home in! [figure reflects a rough estimate based on mass, ballparked nesting doll consolidation rate, and accumulation trends & projections spreadsheet calculations, as generated by our team of interns].

Graduation season is here, and so are certified organic flowers straight from California. 🌸 🌺 🌹
A flower’s length of travel and whether it is certified organic may not be something we consider when buying them for our loved ones...but maybe we ought to?
The US floral market is about a $16 billion industry, organic flowers make up less than .25% of the sales! That means, that 99.75% of the flowers purchased are grown using some of the highest amounts of conventional farming practices. (pesticides, insecticides and fungicides). We all know the dangers and the environmental impact that these practices have on our food supply, but get this, flowers are considered non edible, so even the restrictions and "safe guards" we had in conventional cultivation of food don't apply. Meaning that flowers are doused with higher levels of these chemicals that we are already trying to avoid! Furthermore, nearly 85% of flowers sold in the US are imported, mainly from countries in South America, where our agriculture guidelines do not even apply . When they come into the country, they are not even checked for levels of pesticides, just bugs and pests.
In 2017, a study was conducted in Belgium to see the volume of pesticides florist were exposed to. Scientist instructed twenty professional florist to wear cotton gloves while working with flowers for two whole days. They found that their samples contained more than 100 active chemicals, on average each florist was exposed 37 different chemicals, many substances exceeding the level that is considered "safe". More about the cotton glove study found here:
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5451977/
The florist is only the middle person - which means that ourselves and those we love are the final destination for all of these chemicals. Hand your loved one a real bouquet 💐and feel good knowing that the only thing they'll be inhaling is some pollen and natural florals from the plants. 🐝

Psst... did you know you can use your quarter 2 member-owner coupon for flowers? Thats right, $5 off any bouquet priced $10 or more.
