Local Organic Baby Ginger is here!! Grown by Ray and Virginia Johnson, Nevada's first Certified Organic Farmers at Custom Gardens in Silver Springs. This crop is extremely special and available for a limited time. The Johnsons have created a micro climate perfect for raising this bright, beautiful, beneficial root, which is harvested early and does not have the tough papery skin most gingers do, making prep a breeze. We are so excited to share that they have set the entirety of this years harvest aside for the co-op. We will be featuring it in our produce department as well as in our prepared foods and juice bar recipes as long as we can get it. If you're a fan of ginger or looking for some help with digestion and anti-inflammation, give this stuff a whirl while you can!!
2019 MEMBER EQUITY DRIVE A SUCCESS!
Thanks to member-owner contributions in October your co-op raised over
$22,000 in equity!! This means we have surpassed the amount set by the
Board Of Directors to proceed with the installation of Reno's first Local &
Organic Salad Bar. Our board of directors will be approving the purchase
of the salad bar at their November meeting and from there we can order our
custom unit, which will take 8-12 weeks to arrive. We are keeping our
fingers crossed for an early Spring 2020 install! Stay tuned for more
details, and thanks for making the equity drive a success - we own it <3
CALL TO ACTION IF YOU CARE ABOUT LOCAL MEAT
(You might not think that you care directly but if you are opposed to CAFOS (concentrated animal feeding operations) and their role in animal abuse, climate change, and corporate subsidies for genetically modified commodity crops, you might want to read on).
Things are tricky in our foodshed and primarily in Northern NV when it comes to raising healthy animals with excellent land stewardship practices. A lot of work goes into the process, oftentimes with an underwhelming financial return for smaller producers who prioritize regenerative agricultural practices and the health and well-being of their flocks and herds. One of the things that could make our ranchers lives a lot easier and more financially sustainable is to have access to a year-round, full-scale USDA approved slaughterhouse. Fortunately, Mike Holcomb (former butcher at Wolf pack Meats) and his group are working on the Carson Valley Meats Project and they need your support. The facility is set to be reviewed by the County Commissioners on Wednesday, November 13th at 1:00 pm at the CVIC Hall in Minden, NV. Please show up and voice your support or fill out this form online at:
https://www.douglascountynv.gov/government/board_of_county_commissioners.
Not sure if everyone out there realizes this but the co-op is one of the only retail outlets in Northern Nevada where you can find a variety of locally raised and finished meat products. We stock Grass-fed and finished beef, goat, lamb, bison and pastured NON-GMO pork from Albaugh Ranch (Fallon, NV), Montero Ranch (Lovelock, NV), Holley Family Farms (Dayton, NV), Black Rock Bison (Minden, NV) and Hulsman Ranch (Susanville, CA). As of this year we also have Nevada pastured chickens and for a very limited time, pastured turkeys from Kennedy Ranch (Lamoille, NV). If you love having access to these items at the incredible prices that our ranchers are able to offer their goods to the co-op then please consider submitting public comment or coming to the meeting on the 13th.
EVERYONE IS WELCOME! Open every day from 730am-9pm
