No City Coffee opens upstairs at the co-op on Monday March 7th!

No City Coffee is our newest upstairs department at the co-op. The entire drink menu has been curated by the local coffee connoisseur, Ryan Stark.  Ryan worked in Reno coffee shops for nearly a decade before moving to Oakland, CA where he started his own shop, Black Spring Coffee.  He ran Black Spring for another 8 years until the pandemic hit and he decided to move back to Reno, NV with his family.  He continued to roast and sell his specialty blends using low acid green coffee beans from Josuma Coffee Company. In the summer of 2021, Ryan reached out to the co-op about opening a new shop in our building as a department of the co-op.  We were definitely curious and eager to learn if Ryan's coffee would pass the GBCFC Product Buying Guideline test...so he set up an interview with Melind, the owner of Josuma Coffee Company , and here's a few of the cool things that we learned:
1.  Melind's family has been working very specific coffee estates in India for over 25 years and their coffee farmers are paid more than double the current fair trade price!
2.  Most of the green coffee beans that No City Coffee will be sourcing come from the Hulikere Family: (Chinnenahalli and Woodway Estates) - these beans are some of the lowest acid beans in the world.  This is the result of “monsooning,” a post-harvest process unique to India, where it is exposed to monsoon winds in an open-walled warehouse for 12 to 16 weeks. During the processing, the coffee loses nearly all of its acidity.
3.  Throughout the world, coffee growers are struggling with the dual challenges of climate change and low coffee prices.  As the coffee industry looks for more environmentally and economically sustainable ways to cultivate beans, Josuma notes that so many of the proposed changes are measures already in place at Indian coffee farms.  Learn more about the environmental advantages of India-grown coffee beans.
No City Coffee definitely passes and surpasses the GBCFC standards. We will be offering organic vegan non-dairy milk and creamer, organic cow milk and creamer options, and a local milk option from Sandhill Dairy in Fallon, NV. We make our own organic fair-trade organic chocolate mocha syrup from scratch using coconut cream and maple syrup.  Now you can feel better about letting the kiddos have a hot chocolate when you know it's free of refined sugar!
We are honored and excited to announce the opening of the co-op's newest upstairs department, open every day from 7:30am-2:30pm.  🖤🖤🖤

Our number one goal for the No City coffee shop space was to fit in as many plants as possible.  Mission accomplished thanks to Nina, the owner of . 🌱🌱🌱  Check out our tiny upstairs jungle in the images below.

What about the reopening of the Foodshed Cafe?

Great question!  The Foodshed Cafe side of the upstairs space will definitely be reopening, the big question for all of us is...when?  The GBCFC Board of Directors & Staff are working out the details for the new and improved Foodshed Cafe.  The project is a pretty significant undertaking and will take some time but we promise that it will be worth the wait.  We hope to announce our plans by the end of June 2022, once the board finishes their 5-year strategic plan.  🤗🤩🥳
