A Means to an "Ends" and Other Great 2018 Accomplishments
ENDS used:4. An Economically viable, cooperatively owned business that creates a social and economic
network that is just, trustworthy, and transformative.
6. A local business that models, practices, and promotes environmental stewardship.
Our triple bottom line isn’t the only thing that keeps us accountable for being the best, most sustainable, trustworthy, and thoughtful co-op we strive to be. As we continue to reflect on the last year(s) and what has been accomplished, it is worthwhile to connect these successes with the “ends” that drive the heart and soul in this cooperative. Without both in place, we fall uneven and unbalanced with not enough profit to continue, and not enough heart to make the difference.
In 2018, we had struggles and triumphs but came out on top largely due to fostering a network of member-owners, patrons, and staff that love and support our mission. Ending with 12,395 members, we added 1,039 new ones (!!!), had over 60% in overall member sales, and continued to reward our staff for working their hardest and smartest throughout the year - creating a member and staff network that is happy and enthusiastic to come into the coop everyday. This end, that we have helped foster this community that is just, trustworthy, and transformative, is a huge deal every year because every year we can continue to meet and exceed it through community outreach (look into soulfulseeds.com), quality member services (meet our new MOSC!), and excellent staff (come in literally any day).
Hand in hand, we stepped up to the plate on another one of our ends - through recycling (123,552 lbs!), composting (113,400 lbs!), and properly disposing of glass (31,915 deposits!) we helped the earth spin another year, and kept Reno and its community at the front of our efforts to model, practice, and promote environmental stewardship - we are nurturing what we can of this earth one pound at a time. This is just internal “waste” management, too! We, starting from the source, maintained 48.91% organic sales and 79.66% Non-GMO sales by sourcing from our local vendors and farmers and maintaining relationships within this local community to keep them thriving and keep ourselves providing only the highest quality items to our patronage.
“A means to an end” typically takes a more negative connotation with a laissez-faire attitude, but we have spent years being anything but. We are continuously getting better at creating and changing and fluctuating and adjusting our means to meet the best “ends” possible. Each year. Every year. And to-date? Especially last year.

Local Perenn Bakery has arrived at the co-op!! Baguettes, Country Loaves, Oat Sourdough and Seeded Sourdough will be here fresh every week from Thursday to Sunday. We are super excited to offer these beauties which are made just up the street at their bakery on Saint Lawrence Ave. Perenn is run by the same talented folks who do Butter & Salt Gatherings - local catering well known for delicious and gorgeously presented plates, attention to detail, and commitment to local sourcing - they were DROPP's top purchasing community partner in 2018! That said, it should come as no surprise that these breads are crafted with organic ingredients, and yes, they taste as good as they look. Behold and devour the art of bread!
THE GBCFC EGG BUYING GUIDE
This concise info card was designed to help you make an informed decision next time you're at the egg cooler. The chart on the front shows the practices, certifications, and location for each of our egg providers. On the back are quick and easy to understand definitions of this often confusing egg lingo that we hope lifts some of the fog. The food industry is rife with all kinds of misleading [greenwash-y] information - we recently heard egg terminology compared to "a 1984 scenario: war is peace, slavery is freedom, and beak-cutting is humane..." If you've ever wondered what "free range" actually means to the USDA, give it a look next time you're in the store, you might be surprised.

The coop staff likes to stay on top of all things natural food industry [our jobs kind of rely on it]. One of our favorite sources is New Food Economy. In their own words: "The New Food Economy is an award-winning non-profit newsroom using independent, deep, and unbiased reporting to investigate the forces shaping how and what we eat. We are the home of a new kind of food journalism that goes beyond the gustatory to tell the urgent, under-reported stories of a changing system no one can opt out of." NFE regularly serves up a great balance of environmental, political, and science-focused stuff, like this piece on pomelo-inspired foam [which reminds us of this amazing cheese-shaped foam story from years back]. For something our lives depend on, we don't hear too much about food in the news. If you're hungry for more information, check out New Food Economy.
