💐🌷 Meet Patricia Starkey 💐🌷
Petals & Pages (Fernley, NV)
Trisha Starkey, pictured above and in the left top photo, is a floral designer, flower farmer and educator located in Fernley, NV. She is the owner and operator of Petals & Pages Flower Farm. After finding a connection with the work of flower farming in 2019, she dedicated the next four growing seasons to define her niche and understand her unique high desert climate. With years of growing and a few seasons of freelancing with other regional florists, she branched out and dove headfirst into the floral design world.
"I curate floral designs that draw you in, allowing the wildness of the tendrils and vines to forage their own path, the romantic ruffles of garden roses and peonies to entice you in for that unmistakable garden scent, and the unmatched pillow-like petals of the dahlia to muster an affair of wonder. No two creations are alike, providing a completely unique experience for weddings and events." - Trish
💐🌷 Meet Tiffany Brown Anderson 💐🌷
Earth & Seeds (Reno, NV)
Founded by photojournalist Tiffany Brown Anderson (pictured above and in the top right photo) in 2020, Earth & Seeds™ was born out of pandemic and a decade-long escalation of high intensity urban gardening. In addition to a deep love of spending time nurturing plants, Tiffany's fire inside was to cultivate locally grown flowers safe from toxic chemicals with a lower environmental cost and zero human rights issues associated with imported flowers. Earth & Seeds was sown into a small, woman-owned local business.
Balancing editorial photography work and deadlines had become a stressful juggle after having children beginning in 2012. Earth & Seeds is Tiffany's pandemic-baby, to pivot to a new purpose-filled calling and creating mid-life harmony of heart, family and work. For herself, our community and the earth.
In addition to growing seasonal specialty flowers, Earth & Seeds creates botanically centered small batch seasonal crafts and home items to bring nature indoors through the changing seasons. These everlasting arts are made entirely of Earth & Seeds grown florals.
As an urban micro farm, Earth & Seeds is passionate about the regeneration of soil life, enhancing biodiversity, and improving water absorption and retention. Sharing how these practices can be implemented throughout our high desert community is at the heart of our woman-owned small business, and community partnerships.
In January 2023 Earth & Seeds joined 1% for the Planet®. Becoming a 1% for the Planet member is an investment in ethical business and the future of our planet. They will be adding more information to their website about their on-going community partnership with Urban Roots and other giving initiatives.
Organic Purple Asparagus Is In From Sierra Valley Farms!
Above is Gary Romano, the owner and operator of Sierra Valley Farms out in Sierra Valley. He just dropped off his first harvest of this beautiful organic purple asparagus. Like its white counterpart, purple asparagus is mild in flavor but sweeter than green asparagus. It has a higher content of natural sugars than other asparagus varieties. Purple asparagus is also nuttier in flavor. When cooked, these purple, stalky vegetables resemble a blend of barley, almonds and artichokes.
We will have this delicious crop for a very limited window, possibly just a couple of weeks. Definitely don’t miss this opportunity, SVF's flavor and quality are unparalleled in the market! On that note, check out his Farmer's Market page here - one of the best markets around with occasional live music http://www.sierravalleyfarms.com/.
They host 25 vendors; a “one-stop shop” for patrons who can get seasonal fresh fruits and vegetables, local meats, fresh fish from Pacific coast, baked goods, mushrooms, condiments, wines and wine tasting, deli meats and cheese, organic milk and dairy, and many other locally crafted artisan value-added products and crafts.
What Amatxi Whispered - written, illustrated and published by long time co-op member Zoe Bray
"What Amatxi Whispered" weaves together Zoe’s Basque roots, the Truckee River, and the Lamiak - an anthropomorphic creature in Basque mythology which dwells in the wilderness, particularly in the forest and especially near rivers. Zoe’s book is written in both Euskera (Basque language) and English. BTW - Amatxi means Grandma 👵🏼 in English ❣️
Different accounts and interpretations describe Lamiak as both benevolent and spiritual beings, and as mischievous and sometimes downright pests, who played tricks on humans.
“To my Amatxi, Lamiak simply represent an essence and a love of the mystery and beauty of nature. With this story, I wish to honor ancestral and indigenous knowledge in tune with nature beyond todays sociopolitical boundaries.” - Zoe Bray

Northern Nevada has a rich heritage of Basque agriculture. In fact, Nevada and Idaho are the two most heavily populated states with Basque communities, many of whom came to raise sheep. One of the last remaining large-scale NV Basque sheepherders, who is still grazing sheep all of the way from Carson Valley Nevada to Bridgeport California, is Borda Ranch Lamb - you can find Zoe’s new book and Borda Ranch’s grass-fed and finished lamb on the shelves at our co-op. 🐑

NEW Industrial Seed Oil Indicator Sticker and ISO-Free Housemade Kitchen Items at the Co-op

A Word From Our In-House Nutritionist:
Michelle Nash

The Great Basin Community Food Co-op
On March 25th the Co-op Kitchen (in the basement ) removed the two main cooking oils that we had been using for years to roast all of our vegetables: organic sunflower and safflower cooking oils. We replaced them with non-GMO avocado oil. We also use organic olive oil, organic coconut oil, and organic butter in more of our traditional baked goods and meat and dairy-based dishes.
Seed Oil Free products are those that do not contain the following oils: canola (rapeseed), vegetable, soybean, corn, cottonseed, safflower, sunflower, grapeseed and rice bran oil. These oils undergo a chemically intensive refinement process in order to extract the oils; this process oxidizes the delicate fatty acid structure which is then chemically bleached and deodorized so that the end product is palatable. Even the organic varieties of these oils pose a risk to health because of the damage done to the fat in the extraction process. These oils, and products that contain them, have an inflammatory effect in the body and are linked to many chronic diseases. Here is a Weston A. Price Foundation Wise Traditions podcast where you can learn more.
You will now see the Seed Oil Free indicator icon (pictured above) on all of the GBCFC Housemade items that do not contain industrial seed oils. 🩷❤️🧡💛💚🩵💙💜🖤🩶🤍🤎
No more Beyond Meat or La Croix
We have recently made the decision to stop carrying La Croix sparkling water and Beyond Meat plant based meat alternatives.
Why?
Based on our GBCFC Buying Guidelines, we do not buy products that contain artificial preservatives, flavors, sweeteners, or colors.
La Croix lacks transparency about what their natural flavors and natural essences are made of, which could be a large combination of unknown and undisclosed ingredients. They fail to make a statement on their products explaining their meaning of the term natural. Learn more here: https://drcate.com/natural-flavors-incude-drug-like-compounds/
We recently came across a third-party test on Beyond Meat that found 1ppb of Glyphosate residue and its breakdown AMPA. Beyond Meat also contains high amounts of canola oil as well as natural flavors that are unknown. Learn more here: https://illuminatelabs.org/blogs/health/beyond-meat-review
So now what? We’ve replaced these brands with ones we trust and love! We expanded our flavor selection of Spindrift sparkling waters (made with real fruit juice!) and brought in some clean plant-based meat options from Dr. Praegers and Jack & Annie’s.

The Reno Seed Exchange Has a Seed Filled Filing Cabinet Upstairs in No City Coffee 🌾🌻

A message from Molly Brown (pictured right), Founder of The Reno Seed Exchange:
Welcome to the Reno Seed Exchange! We're thrilled to offer a unique opportunity for all plant enthusiasts in Reno. Our FREE seed exchange, located inside the Great Basin Community Food Co-op, is open to everyone who loves to grow plants and wants to share their passion with others. Our concept is simple: take some seeds, grow your plants, save the seeds, and share some back with the Reno Seed Exchange. This exchange program not only helps you save money but also ensures that you have access to a wide variety.
We believe that everyone should have access to healthy, organic produce, and growing your own vegetables, herbs, and fruits is an excellent way to achieve this goal. By participating in our seed exchange program, you'll be doing your part to promote sustainable agriculture practices in the Reno area. ~ We can't wait to see what you grow!
~ Here are some good practices to follow when participating in the Reno Seed Exchange:
- Whenever possible, try to use organic seeds, fertilizers and pesticides for your plants. This ensures that the plants are grown without harmful chemicals, making them healthier and safer for consumption.
- It's important to make sure your seeds are properly dried before donating them to the exchange. This ensures they will be viable for planting when someone else takes them home.
- It's important to label your seeds with the name of the plant and the date that they were harvested. This helps other gardeners know exactly what they are getting and how fresh the seeds are.
- When donating seeds to the exchange, make sure that they are viable and have a good chance of growing. Seeds that are too old or have been improperly stored may not be viable.
- One of the best things about the seed exchange is the opportunity to learn from other gardeners. Share your knowledge and experiences with others, and don't be afraid to ask questions and learn from them as well. Find us on Facebook.
