Welcome Melanie, Our New
Co-General Manager!
The GBCFC Board of Directors recently approved a proposal to move to a joint
GM structure. The Co-GM model would promote a stronger leadership team with better work-life balance. Current GM, Amber Sallaberry (pictured to the right), and current Operations Manager, Melanie Stephenson (pictured above in the ice castle), are looking forward to a very bright future working together as CO-General Managers!Melanie has been the operations manager at our co-op on and off for the past 4 years. She left at one point to hike the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine. 🏆🧗♀️
Melanie was born and raised in Northern Utah where she received a B.S. Degree in Economics. After 20 years working as a traditional corporate manager, she decided to pursue work and life experiences that better aligned with her personal beliefs and interests--namely food, food politics, food systems, and long distance hiking. She's also a co-op nerd and has visited more than 50 cooperative grocery stores across the country.
Since leaving her career in 2017, she received a professional chef certification from the Natural Gourmet Institute in NYC and has hiked over 4,500 miles.
The primary thing that drew her to Reno (besides the Sierras and Northern Nevada's gorgeous high desert) was our food co-op. She believes our co-op is a place where good food, community, and food activism converge, and that's what she wants to spend her time growing.
Sales & Cash Flow Remain Strong Despite Higher Expenses in 2022
Beginning in July 2022, the operations team (with the support and blessing from our Board of Directors) made the decision to offer all full-time staff members, working 30+ hours per week, 100% EMPLOYER PAID HEALTH & WELLNESS BENEFITS. This led to significantly increased expenses, we went from paying $6,000 to $16,000 per month in healthcare and wellness benefits. In addition to offering the Hometown Health Gold EPO package, Best Dental, and Arch Vision insurance, our co-op also offers alternative wellness packages for staff members who do not use traditional insurance.
2022 sales growth continued at 5.14%, nearly 2 points above the national goal of 3%. Beginning in June of 2022, we started to see really high-cost increases in goods, anywhere from 6% up to 20%. Since we weren't sure how permanent these inflation prices were going to be, we decided to hold off on raising prices until the end of 2022.
We WORK REALLY HARD to ensure that we are competitive on all brand-name items that other retailers in town sell. Check out these basket comparisons below with Whole Foods (Amahole) and Sprouts (Pouts). We were not able to compare any of our produce with Pouts since they do not sell very much organic produce, theirs was mostly conventional. Amahole did have the organic produce items in stock and, as you can see, our prices were lower.
*These co-op prices are our everyday public prices, not on sale and no membership needed.

BEST TEXT MESSAGE EVER!
Below is a text from Jeannie Damonte, one of the local producers that the co-op works with. Jeannie provides vibrant basil bunches to our produce department and our kitchen department. She also grows over 8,000 seedlings for the annual seeding sale. Jeannie has recently moved and she was in the process of signing a new lease. The man that she is leasing the property with wanted to spray their 100-acre plot with Round Up - a glyphosate product that we do not allow in the . Fortunately, Jeannie worked with Rob Holley of Holley Family Farms and they were able to figure out an alternative herbicide that is OMRI* approved. This is a HUGE win for Northern Nevada! No cancer-causing herbicides seeping through the soil and destroying everything in their path to the Walker River ❤️ - Thank you so much Jeannie Damonte and Rob Holley...it's little actions like this that slowly change the direction of agriculture in our state.
