Introducing our new Medical Medium inspired detox smoothie - The HEAVY METAL MEDLEY - a bright and uplifting sweet blend of Organic Bananas, Wild Blueberries, Organic Raspberries, Organic Orange Juice, and Organic Spirulina. Sounds delicious, but why didn't we call it ALT COUNTRY MEDLEY or ACID HOUSE MEDLEY? Anthony William explains "Toxic heavy metals are virtually everywhere, and are present in things we come in contact with every day, such as aluminum cans and aluminum foil, batteries, metal cookware, old paint, and even the foods we eat. For instance, pesticides and herbicides (which can be hard to completely avoid even on a strict organic diet), are a common source of heavy metals. As a result, most of us are carrying around heavy metals that have been with us for almost our whole lives and which have burrowed deep inside our tissues. Over time, toxic heavy metals can oxidize, causing damage to surrounding tissue and promoting inflammation. They can inflict damage on virtually every system and organ, including our brain, liver, digestive system, and other parts of our nervous system. Toxic heavy metals put an immense burden on our immune system, leaving us vulnerable to a variety of illnesses." The edible blue-green spirulina algae draws out heavy metals from your brain, central nervous system, and liver, and soaks up heavy metals. Wild Blueberries also help draw heavy metals out of your brain tissue, healing and repairing any gaps created by oxidation when the heavy metals are removed. The potent antioxidants in wild blueberries help reverse any oxidative damage left behind by the heavy metal removal. This is especially important for your brain tissue—in fact, wild blueberries are the most powerful food for halting or in some cases reversing Alzheimer’s and dementia.
We recognize that unless you grew up around supplements [or maybe next to a pond], this cute little pile of green powder [spirulina] might be a foreign substance to you. Gram for gram, this blue-green algae may be the most nutritious food on the planet! Its packed with B Vitamins, Copper, Iron, Omega-6 and Omega-3 fatty acids. The protein in spirulina is similar to that found in eggs, with all the essential amino acids our bodies need. It is also known to have powerful anti-oxidation and anti-inflammatory properties, and helps detoxify heavy metal accumulations in the body. A superfood that is by nature the very definition of "nutrient-dense" - and every HEAVY METAL MEDLEY has a full tablespoon!! Crank it up to 11!!
We checked in with prepared foods pillar Marshall Vallance about his favorite coop item, the mighty Kale Salad: “This was actually the first product that I made in the kitchen back when I started here. From the process to the flavor, I’ve gotten to know the recipe like the back of my hand. What I like most about it is how different the dressing is. I feel like the kale, carrots and pumpkin seeds wouldn’t really go together unless it was mixed with the flavors in this dressing - it ties it all together and it kind of explodes in your mouth. The garlic, mint, ginger - its just a crazy ingredient combination that I’ve never seen until I started making it here. Everything in the recipe is healthy, and whenever I have it I just feel really good. I’ve eaten it before going out skating and its not heavy or greasy so my body just feels ready to do anything. It helps everything just kinda function better too, because it’s light and easy to digest. The best time to eat it is when it’s cold, but I’ll also eat one after its been sitting out for a while, with the dressing melted down a bit. At this point , at the very least I eat one probably three days a week. At the very most - yeah I’ve had two in a day.”
Farm Tour Season Continues!!
In the weeks since our last COOP SCOOP dropped, we visited another handful of amazing Local producers. Check out the photos and keep your eyes peeled for their goods in our produce department and on DROPP.COOP. These educational farm tours serve to connect our local and regional producers with our staff, who are then able to pass the knowledge along to anyone who walks through our doors. Not only is this a lot of fun, but it ties back directly to a few of the co-op's Ends Policies, Four Year Strategic Plan, and even our 7 Cooperative Principles.
Farmer Lyndsey Langsdale of - Pretty amazing what these guys are up to, if you don’t already follow their page be sure to as they will have a farm stand all summer on Mayberry!
Mary and Josiah of MOJO Farms - Reno’s newest urban farmstead. These two are using a hybrid of French Intensive and permaculture based farming. They will be selling soon to our local food hub DROPP. That pink radish that Mary is holding might be the most brilliant and delicious radish I’ve ever eaten.
Nick & Christine with little Xavier at in Wadsworth NV. These fine humans supply our produce department with what our own Jesse Lopez calls the most "pristine" produce such as radishes, greens and cherry tomatoes.
We visited with Karen and Louie, the new owners of Cherry Dog Orchards (formerly Sweet Orchards) in Fallon, NV. Happy to say that these guys are officially GBCFC APPROVED and we will be buying their cherries 🍒 and amazing stone fruit beginning in the next couple of weeks. In case any of you guys are not aware, we have our own inspection process for producers that we work with who are not certified organic… In order to be GBCFC approved you must farm using organic practices. We do not allow GMO’s or the use any synthetic fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides. Cherry Dog passed with flying colors because they plan on becoming certified organic in the next year or two…
Keep an eye out for their Rainier and Bing Cherries at the coop by early next week!!
