Local Farm GAPs Planning Update
We're thrilled to announce that our 2024 Local Farmer GAPs planning is now complete! GAPs is a process and spreadsheet that we use each year to determine the volume of various local crops that all of our Fresh Departments need for the year. Fresh Departments include Produce, Juice Bar, Kitchen, Bakery, and No City Coffee... soon to be Foodshed Cafe. Each winter, we have individual meetings with all of the local farms that supply fresh produce to the co-op and identify any GAPs in the annual calendar. With so many tried and true returning farms and brand new farmers coming online this year, we are excited... to say the least 🤩🤩🤩
Thanks to the work of our Department Leaders and our Local Food & Sustainability Coordinator, Philip Moore, we are set up to move more local produce than any other year since DROPP (our former food hub) closed down. Here's to a fruitful 2024!
Little Frog Farm (Reno, NV)
Please welcome Little Frog Farm (Reno, NV) to the Great Basin Community Food Co-op! These new microgreens producers are located right here in Reno, NV and you might recognize the faces behind this operation as previous co-op employees, Brenton & Kayla de Lancey. 🫶🏻🐸
Little Frog Farm will be providing the Produce Department and the Foodshed Cafe with many different types of sprouts. They grow all their microgreens in soil-filled trays inside a climate-controlled greenhouse. This ensures the proper conditions for the shoots to achieve optimal nutritional value as well as quality. They use only OMRI-listed amendments (from the National Organic Program NOP) and are currently putting together their plan for organic certification. Come try out these microgreens, all varieties are $1 off for January!

The containers that Little Frog Farm uses are PLA compostable and these vendors pay 10 times the amount for these than they would just buying cheap standard plastic.
BONUS TANGENT ON WHETHER PLAs ARE BETTER THAN STANDARD PLASTICS???
Back when Brenton of Little Frog Farm used to be the Local Food & Sustainability Coordinator at the co-op, we all spent hours debating whether PLAs are truly better for the environment than standard plastic (see chart below). Most plastics photodegrade into smaller particles but never fully biodegrade. In a controlled environment, PLA will naturally break down, returning to the earth, so it can be "classified as a biodegradable and compostable material". However, none of the PLAs in Nevada will find their way to an industrial composting facility... because WE DON'T HAVE ANY HERE! Even our largest compost facility, Full Circle Compost, isn't capable of reaching the temps needed to break down most PLA containers and utensils on the market. A bunch of us have tried to experiment with PLAs in our home compost piles and the products NEVER BROKE DOWN, even after years. In realizing this, you also have to ask the question - How high of temps are needed in a composting facility to break down PLAs? Wouldn't that kill all of the beneficial microbes in your compost if you went that high? Alas, there are not a lot of great options in our county or our state at this point. 🌎 🙃
Here at the GBCFC, we still believe that PLAs are MUCH better in terms of long-term environmental impact. That is why most* of the cutlery and to-go ware that we have in our store is PLA. *We are constantly researching and updating our packaging as new PLA options become available. Decoding Signage At GBCFC
One of the desired outcomes or "ends" we want to achieve as a cooperatively owned business is a "knowledgeable and empowered community that can make informed food choices." One of the ways we do this is by using color-coded shelf tags to provide our member owners with information about the products we carry. This enables you to make the choice that feels the best for your life. Your co-op has your back!

Green Shelf Tags: Represents items that are locally sourced from within our foodshed. You know you are strengthening our local food system and supporting local farmers and artisan producers when you choose these items.
Yellow Shelf Tags: Represents products that are at minimum non-GMO. All organic products are also represented with a yellow tag.
White Shelf Tags: Represents products that may have GMO-containing ingredients in them. We work to minimize the number of these products in the store. That said, we are a full-service grocery store and sometimes there is not a better alternative. LEARN MORE ABOUT OUR BUYING GUIDELINES

Adrenal Cocktails Are A Perfect Winter Pick Me Up ❄️
As the name suggests, the idea of the adrenal cocktail is to provide nutrients that support the adrenal glands. The adrenal glands are two small endocrine glands that sit atop the kidneys. They help regulate many bodily functions including metabolism, blood pressure, and stress response, as they are responsible for producing aldosterone, cortisol, and adrenaline. These little glands are commonly overworked by stress and other lifestyle factors that increase the burden put on them to support bodily homeostasis.
The three main components of an adrenal cocktail are vitamin C, sodium, and potassium, which are all easily depleted under chronic stress. Vitamin C is a broad-spectrum antioxidant and is an essential part of stress hormone production; it helps the necessary minerals get to the liver and then on to support the adrenals. Chronic stress leads to cellular sodium loss, which then causes cellular potassium loss as the body strives to maintain a very specific cellular mineral balance. The adrenal cocktail provides support for the adrenals and liver by replenishing these nutrients that are depleted during times of stress. It is important to support adrenals through healthy stress management and adequate sleep.
