Happy Birthday to US!

To be interested in food but not in food production is clearly absurd. ~Wendell Berry

It's our twelfth birthday!

12 years ago today the first meeting for the Great Basin Community Food Cooperative was held.  We spent the next year running a buying club out of our kitchen and managed to save $814 in a cash box that we hid under the bed.  We worked with only 3 local farmers that first year.  It's incredible to see the growth & movement of our co-op...nearing the $5 million sales mark and purchasing from over 140 local farmers, ranchers & producers!  GBCFC employs over 40 amazing humans who have worked their butts off to help us make our co-op one of the first businesses in Nevada with a voluntary entry level wage of $15/hour by the end of this year.

Thank you so much Reno for supporting local food and the cooperative economy...we couldn't have done it without the help of literally thousands of volunteers and paid staff over the years.  This is the power of a community working together! WE OWN IT, LET'S CONTINUE TO GROW IT!

Our humble beginnings in 2005, as a buying club in a garage.

Our first real location as a co-op, in the back half of a record store on Wonder Street.

In 2009, we moved to 542 1/2 Plumas Street, where we quickly outgrew even this expanded space.

Our current location, which we moved to in 2012! We're doing our best to outgrow this one as well, so keep your eyes and ears out :)

Organic Trade Association SUES the USDA, with a little help from local food cooperatives!

As many of you know, we are members of a larger cooperative, the NCG (National Cooperative Grocers) that shares information, buying power, and resources among more than 140 member cooperatives nationwide.
Just last week, the NCG signed on to a lawsuit against the USDA over organic rules. Basically, the new federal administration has repeatedly delayed implementation of new organic standards regarding livestock. The biggest change that was supposed to be implemented clarified standards for organic chicken, requiring set amounts of outdoor space, which were previously left nebulous and abused by the biggest poultry farms. Because this new rule would take away the certification for the largest organic poultry agribusinesses. the USDA is ignoring 14 years of research and over 47,000 public comments that have gone into the new rules.
Thank you to the Organic Trade Association and the NCG for standing up for stringent organic standards!
