Meet the 2021 Board Candidates

David Funk - GBCFC Board Member 2015-2021 & 2021 Candidate
David Funk is a Nevada native, born and raised in Reno. "Several of the buildings around the Co-op were the homes of my relatives. A couple of the law offices on Arlington and Court Street were where my aunts lived as well as the building that now houses the Reno Fly Shop. My wife and I live in the Old Southwest in the house that my Grandma and Grandpa designed and lived in. Spending my entire life here, I have seen many changes in “The Biggest Little City”. I feel there are so many wonderful qualities of our town. We have quick access to the mountains, lakes and wilderness areas and there are many great events centered around the arts. I am very excited about our food scene, with an incredible energy being focused on sustainability and sourcing local. Many restaurant owners are supporting, promoting, and even carrying each others’ products.
Thirty years ago I decided to become vegetarian and later took on a solely plant-based diet. With this came a passion for growing much of our own food as well as helping others do the same. Each year I take part in the Co-op Seedling Sale, growing for the community, over 1000 plants to place in their own gardens. I am currently in the process of developing a business to grow sustainable, local food year-round.
This brings us to the Co-op. They are all about local and sustainability. They are about community. They are like family. It is their passion and that is why I love the Co-op. I am so excited to be a part of that and I hope to be able to help make this amazing, community-owned grocery store even better."

Kristina Shea - GBCFC Board Candidate 2021
Kristina has lived in the Reno/Tahoe area for nearly ten years and was raised in San Francisco.  She owns and operates a CCOF certified organic heritage breed, pasture-raised, humane, Red wattle pork farm with her family in Washoe Valley. She is passionate about certified organic farming and raising animals in humane conditions as well as local food systems.
Her professional career includes an extensive background in non-profit and government finance and operations, including roles at the Legislative Counsel Bureau Fiscal Analysis Division and global- mission driven NGOs. She is currently in a doctoral program at Pepperdine University where she studies organizational leadership, specifically positive and behavioral psychology in leadership, and started a non-profit called IID, which is primary mission is to bring evidence-based, validated leadership and staff competency training to underserved populations including colleges, small non-profits, and for-profits, governments, and incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals.
Kristina is excited and grateful to be a part of the GBCFC community.

Garrett Menghini - GBCFC Board Candidate 2021
"I believe one of our most impactful daily decisions is where and how we spend our money. Every dollar spent is a vote for the values we support, and the future we want to be a part of. Short of growing my own food and buying directly from farmers, the co-op is the only place where it feels right to spend my food dollars. With every purchase I'm supporting a world where food is local, clean, and produced in a fair way. I can think of few things more important than that.
As a former engineer at SpaceX, former local small-business owner of Down To Earth Composting, and current local farmer, I have a pragmatic brain, passionate heart, and agricultural experience to add to the board. Beyond my dollars, I'll bring time, energy, and expertise, to help make more clean and local produce available to you at co-op, further supporting the values and vision that we share."

Brand New Automatic Sliding Doors & Grocery Gondola Shelving!

This week we installed brand new automatic sliding doors to replace the heavy two-door metal ones that were there prior.  We have wanted hands-free sliding doors since we moved into the building 10 years ago... and based on past membership surveys, this was at the top of a lot of your lists too!
In addition to doors, we were finally able to trade in our very old and beat up gondola shelving for new black shelves.  We decided to reset our entire grocery department in the process, which created space for nearly 70 new items.  All of the retails holes are not filled yet, come in and let us know what you'd like us to carry or send us an email at info@greatbasinfood.coop with your member requests.
We really can't thank UNFI's merchandising team enough for spending the week with us and helping us with this HUGE project.

Jacobs Berry Farm in Gardnerville, NV

Since 2010, Jacobs Farm (Gardnerville, NV) has planted nearly 1000 blackberry and raspberry plants.  Their berries are available for sale from July to September at the co-op.  All berries are hand-picked when fully ripe for the best flavor, texture, and freshness. Jack Jacobs says that each little ball on a berry is called a drupelet and EACH one needs to be pollinated by a bee. <3
You've got a couple of weeks left to try these incredible Nevada fruits!

The Carbon Farmers - Stagecoach, NV

The Carbon Farmers, Marcia Litsinger & Pauline Hamilton, have made a mix of 70% Full Circle Compost & 30% Biochar = 100% best choice for extending the life in your compost!
One bag is a cubic foot of amendment covering up to 25 square feet.  This soil biochar compost has been approved for organic use by CCOF, under Churchill Butte Organics certification.
When used in your soil, you will be sequestering carbon in your garden, creating a virtuous cycle of carbon that traps it in the soil for decades to come; and acting as a sponge that hosts moisture, fungi, and all needed life creating conditions conducive to perpetuating the life in the soil.  You can pick up a bag at the co-op.
Carbon Farmers say: "Thank you for your contribution in tackling carbon sequestration!"
