April 2024
The Foodshed Cafe is NOW OPEN! Our teams have been working long hours to get this cafe project done on time, and with all our sweet intention brought to life in the final product. Everything from the menu to the plants, decor, layout, retail space, and more has been a labor of love. But we're happy to announce that the stars aligned, and as of yesterday, Foodshed Cafe is open and we're serving our community some of the tastiest food in town! From 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. (the same hours as the store), we'll be slinging sandwiches, burritos, toasts, and more with thoughtful ingredients and a huge emphasis on LOCAL.
Check out our , which supports over 38 local farmers & ranchers! The menu will be regularly updated, too, reflecting the latest farms & ranches featured.Â
We were beyond grateful to celebrate yesterday with an official ribbon-cutting ceremony with board members (previous and current), Soulful Seeds, city officials including Mayor Schieve, the Nevada Department of Agriculture, The Downtown Reno Partnership, media, and a few welcome onlookers from the cafe.Â
P.S. Michelle Nash, Certified NTP & MScN & our Nutrition Education Director dives into more specifics about the Foodshed Cafe menu below. She recently lead our cafe team through nutrition training in preparation of serving our community nutrient-dense, local, and housemade treats!

Edible Landscape Updates
Wednesday, April 3rd at 1:30 PM

Come join Tom & Clay of and our GBCFC Edible Landscape Team on Wednesday April 3rd at 1:30 PM for a Fruit Tree and Grape Vine Pruning Workshop. Clay and Tom Stille will discuss the overall goals of pruning deciduous plants with special emphasis on the different kinds of fruit. Apple, pear, peach, almond, and cherry are all unique in the way they should be pruned for maximum yield. Bring your pruning tools if you have some or use ours. Our first order of business will be learning how to keep your pruners and loppers sharp. And, you will have an opportunity to actually do some pruning for our fruit trees, so you'll leave with confidence to prune your own fruit trees. Please wear long-sleeved shirts, gloves, and safety glasses. We will start at 1:30 PM in front of the Co-op.

This workshop is also the kickoff to Clay's new business (pictured on the right). He has been working in the garden pruning all sorts of trees, shrubs, and vines for more than 20 years. His business will also include irrigation, maintenance, and repair. If you can't make the workshop and need help with your fruit tree pruning, please call Clay at (775) 232-0397.

Food Based On Our Foodshed (And Our Watershed)
Our Cafe Menu is Unlike Any Other in Our Area
Supporting local producers is our main ethos and we have worked hard to develop relationships with many farmers and ranchers in our foodshed, which is defined by our watershed. This is reflected in our offerings at the Foodshed Café with over 38 local producers supplying ingredients for the menu. You can feel good about knowing that when we say local, we mean local. Some highlights of these local ingredients include:
- Local grass fed & finished beef from Avanzino Farm (Reno, NV) and Snowball Ranch (Eureka, NV)
- Local sausage and braised pork from Holley Family Farms (Dayton, NV)
- Local eggs from Kool Kids Ranch (Spanish Springs, NV)
- A large list of vegetables from a variety of local farms
- Local tea (The Radish Hotel and Davidsonâs), coffee (No City), and honey (Al Bees)
- A variety of beers on tap from local breweries
As if this wasnât enough reason to feel great about the food youâll be getting at the Foodshed CafĂ©, thereâs more! Our entire menu is seed-oil free (with the exception of four items currently outsourced: the organic wheat tortillas, the GF brown rice tortillas, vegan butter, and oat milk)! Thatâs right, we donât use any seed oils in the preparation of our food. Instead, we choose to use the following oils/fats: coconut oil, olive oil, avocado oil, butter, ghee, or tallow.
Since the closing of No City coffee during construction, we looked around for another place to satisfy the craving for a wholesome cup of joe. After calling around to several other coffee shops, we were surprised that we were unable to find another coffee shop that uses organic whole milk - something you can be guaranteed to find at the Foodshed Café (serving locally-roasted No City coffee). In addition, our coffee shop also offers a housemade soaked almond milk and a housemade vanilla using organic maple syrup!
Each menu item can be easily customized so you can be sure to get just what you are looking for. While we could go on and on about the distinct features of our menu â and we will later â we really just want you to stop by and try it! Thank you for your support as we work together to build our local food system.
The [Gorgeous] Mural Buzz đ§âđšđ§âđš
When re-stuccoing the section of the building with the added deck ... we had to pivot pretty quickly. "Do we want two mis-matched succo colors and aging paint or do we want to pull the trigger on a new paint job for the entire building?" The later option won, and now with flying colors!Â
A huge shout out, round of applause, and all the praise to our artists, Kate O'Hara and Paige Gomez. These two rose to the challenge of a quick turnaround (conceptualizing, mocking up, and bringing to life) the front of our building. Kate drew inspiration from our produce scene in Northern Nevada, and Paige HAND DREW lettering for our signage. They made an incredible team, and we're excited about the building refresh.Â
