2019 Member Equity Drive is Here: Help us raise money for Reno's 1st Organic Salad Bar!!

WE OWN IT!

If you're reading this its likely you are already aware that October is our annual Membership Drive Month. This is a special period of time every year for the co-op and its membership to raise funds in order to meet bigger goals. In recent years we were able to purchase new equipment for our DROPP food hub space, and of course the big push for the opening of the Food Shed Cafe.
This year we have set our sights on expanding our cafe offerings with an Organic Salad Bar! The GBCFC Board Of Directors [the fine folks elected by the membership] has approved this project if we can raise $20,000 in member equity by the end of October. While the full equity share for each member-owner is $200, any member can invest beyond that amount as Nevada does not limit the amount a co-op member can pay into equity.

Help us fill up this big orange carrot! Every dollar of equity generated puts us closer to a new Salad Bar that will feature Local and Organic seasonal ingredients - the very first of its kind in Reno, and something the membership has expressed great interest in seeing become a reality. One easy way to contribute is to just pay your yearly equity early. Each year during the drive, many member-owners choose to pay ahead on their annual membership. If your equity payment is scheduled every year in May, you may opt pay this month to help the effort of the drive, and your next equity payment would not be due until October of next year.
We also are offering some extra special gifts this year...

All members who contribute $200 or more in equity will earn a free GBCFC branded Klean Kanteen 16oz coffee mug or 32oz bottle - a $50 retail value!! Remember, Nevada has no limit for equity investments so GO BIG!!
Got a friend, family member, coworker or neighbor who has never been to the co-op or might be interested in membership? October is the best month to sign up!! Let them know that $20 a year gets every member-owner the following:

--10% off one purchase every month

--$20 in quarterly department coupons

--10 to 15% off retail items through special orders

--ownership of a local grocery store that supports 100+ local & regional farmers, ranchers and producers

A few years back we crunched the numbers and found that the annual membership payment of $20 PAYS FOR ITSELF in discounts if a member spends an average of just $16.67 each month.

ITAL FARMS
You've seen this guy before. If not flossing in I80 traffic jams, then probably in the produce department at the co-op or slingin' turnips at an area farmers market - its Brenton Aikin of Reno's Ital Farms. With plots going in his front yard, back yard, and at a handful of other urban locations in town, he is transforming our Local Foodshed one microgreen at a time, demonstrating beneficial alternatives to the conventional lawn.

We sat down with Brenton some months back and interviewed him for his official co-op farm bio. Here's a snippet from that conversation:
"I didn't think I'd want to stay in Nevada but the more I've farmed here the more I kinda love it... so I think I'll stick around... I enjoy doing it urban right now. I like that urban farming can be so accessible for people. Whenever I'm working out front or at the other plots, people stop by and they're curious - I think the more people see that, they'll start to question their own narrative about farming and where food comes from. And that will in turn change farmers lives because it will enable them to do it as a career. Most people have no concept of what farming actually looks like and how it works, so this way it's cool because what I'm doing is right in peoples faces."

Ital Farms Micro Basil, a 21 day crop with minimal yield but maximum flavor. Beautifying dishes now in the Food Shed Cafe! Find the rest of Ital's offerings in the co-op produce department and on DROPP.COOP

NEVADA FRESH PAK and PERI AND SONS
We recently got to see some of the harvest in action at Nevada Fresh Pak and Peri and Sons Onions in Yerington, NV. This is all ORGANIC CELERY!!! The scale and the amount of work that goes into getting this Local Organic produce into our store and to kitchens across the country is astounding. The people are phenomenal and the quality that comes from these fields is world renown. Thank you to David, Jagtar, Roberto, Nunes Co, the field workers, and all the people who make this food on our plates possible. Only a couple of weeks left for Nevada Fresh Pak items until next summer. Organic Peri Onions will be around into the spring of 2020.

AVANZINO FARMS
It’s the pumpkin 🎃legend himself - Doug Avanzino. Every Halloween pumpkin that you have enjoyed at the co-op for the last 14 years has been grown by this incredible man out in Palomino Valley. We went to go see him the other day in the DROPP truck and loaded up on all kinds of Local pumpkins - mediums, jumbos, white pumpkins, and decorative "fairytale" pumpkins - they look like they came straight out of Cinderella. Whether you're carving, decorating, baking or making a magical carriage, Avanzino's got you covered. We'll have a great variety of sizes shapes and colors at the co-op in the coming weeks!

EVERYONE IS WELCOME!  Open every day from 730am-9pm
