Bare Naked Birdies - Pastured, Organic, Soy & Corn Free Regional Direct Chicken

Bare Naked Birdies Owners pictured in Reno, NV, visiting GBCFC 🌻
On the heels of the pasture-raised, corn & soy-free eggs from Frey Ranch, we have more exciting chicken news! We now have regional direct pasture-raised, certified organic, corn & soy-free meat chickens available from Bare Naked Birdies!

Located just over the hill in Lincoln, CA, Bare Naked Birdies is a small team of farmers, chefs, and builders who came together to rethink what "better chicken" really means. They believe that pasture alone wasn't enough; it had to start with what the birds eat, how they grow, and how they are cared for every step of the way.
From the ground up, these chickens are given daily access to certified organic pasture. Being pastured lets them practice natural behaviors while foraging, and in turn they work with nature to support Bare Naked Birdies' regenerative farming practices.
Beyond the pasture, feed also makes Bare Naked Birdies different. Not happy with the conventional grain-heavy feeds on the market, the team decided to develop a certified organic, corn-free, soy-free omnivorous diet. What a chicken eats directly impacts taste and texture of the final product, which is why their feed includes marine-based proteins, flaxseed, and nutrient-dense organic inputs that allow for slow, steady growth that is better for you and the chicken.
When it comes time for processing, Bare Naked Birdies uses a USDA-certified facility with state-of-the-art equipment and a skilled team. Animal welfare matters at every stage of a chicken's life, and Bare Naked Birdies prioritizes a calm, low-stress environment in their facility. Once processed, their chicken is air-chilled to preserve integrity, flavor, and texture in the final product. No dilution from water or chlorine baths, just unadulterated chicken from pasture to plate.
For the sales cycle (September 16th - October 20th), all Bare Naked Birdies organic chicken will be 15% off. We currently carry boneless skinless breast, bone-in and boneless thighs, drumsticks, wings, and whole chickens!

Remembering Scott Goodpasture

This is Scott Goodpasture, owner of Pioneer Farm (Fallon, NV). Scott passed away earlier this year. He was one of the first farmers that our Co-op ever started working with 20 years ago. Scott was the self-proclaimed emperor of Shishito peppers and he produced some of the most beautiful and tasty cantaloupes in Northern Nevada (check out his license plate). This time of year brings back so many memories. Scott was a beautiful soul, a diligent expert farmer, and a lover of all creatures, big and small. ❤️ We miss seeing you Scott and we hope you are resting with ease. 🤍
A Not So Commonplace Farm

With all the news about cyclospora and how broken our food systems are in this country, we are selling so much local salad. However, due to the high demand for local greens, our local farmers are having a hard time keeping us in supply during the week. We always want to support the farmers doing the hard work of growing organically and regeneratively, so we had been on the lookout for salads that are not from corporate farms.
We reached out to our distributor Organically Grown Co. (OGC), operating out of Oregon. They supply a lot of co-ops in the NW and are looking to expand south to California and Nevada. OGC pointed us to Commonplace Farms in Corvallis, Oregon. They are an independent farm that grows organically and regeneratively, exactly who we want to support.
Before starting Commonplace Farm, Ashli and Jeremy Mueller worked at Excelsior Farm together and eventually purchased the property in 2015. “We were growing everything you would expect from a highly diversified, small-scale farm,” Jeremy says of Excelsior. “It was something like 50 different crops.”
But over time, they realized they were competing with numerous small-scale farms that were growing and selling the same wide array of organic vegetables. While perfecting their salad products, microgreens, fresh herbs, chicories, kales and chards, Jeremy and Ashli are looking beyond simply growing food to utilizing their role as farmers to make lasting, positive impacts in their community.
The Muellers have a unique vision to bring a high level of professionalism to the small farm scene, and help build a better local food system. The pair is working to create employment opportunities that are beyond just seasonal jobs to offer serious career-minded beginning farmers a viable career path. An especially noble pursuit, as the reality of land ownership is out of reach for many young farmers.
“There are lots of people who want to farm, but few that are as lucky as us to steward a property like this,” Jeremy shares. “We want to spread some of our good fortune around by offering aspiring farmers the opportunity to work with us and be part of building this incredible farm.”
We will be phasing away from salad greens that are from corporate farms, like Earthbound/Taylor Farms, and filling our produce shelves with salad greens that are from farms that we are proud to have on our shelves.
A note from Jeremy at Commonplace Farm:
Ashli and I were drawn to farming by a desire for good work, a more elemental life, and an interest in growing food. We have worked hard for over a decade to build a farm that serves the health of our local community from the soil up.
Together we founded Commonplace Farm on 24 acres in Corvallis, Oregon where we grow organic leafy greens. It's not just Ashli and me now. Our daughter Marion and son Felix came along and we have a lively crew of 5-20 people working on the farm depending on the time of year.
Together we are:
Improving organic, regenerative agriculture
Caring for natural resources
Reducing the use of non-renewable resources
Mitigating climate change through carbon sequestration
Reducing food miles
Helping create a more equitable and diverse local food system
Offering fresh, healthy food to our neighbors

For the cycle, all Commonplace Farm organic bagged salads will be on sale!
5oz bags of organic lettuce mix, wellness mix, spinach, and arugula will be $1.50 off at only $4.49!
10oz bags of organic spinach will be $2.50 off for a sales price of $8.19!

Remember to Breathe!
The way we breathe can significantly affect our health, influencing everything from facial structure and oral health to blood pressure and stress response. Humans can breathe through both the nose and the mouth, but nasal breathing is the body's preferred and much healthier method. Nasal breathing provides essential filtration, as tiny hairs and mucus in the nose trap dust and germs. It also warms and humidifies incoming air before it reaches the lungs, better than the mouth does.
The nose and paranasal sinuses produce nitric oxide, which is taken into the lungs during nasal inhalation. This nitric oxide helps relax and expand blood vessels, improves oxygen circulation and absorption, and fights off bacteria in the incoming air.
Nasal breathing improves oral and dental health by preventing dry mouth and maintaining healthy saliva production, which protects tooth enamel and helps remove harmful acids. In turn, this reduces your chances of developing chronic bad breath, gum inflammation, and cavities. Nasal breathing also supports proper facial structure and jaw alignment by promoting proper tongue posture in the mouth.
Stress response improves with nasal breathing because slower, deeper breaths activate the parasympathetic nervous system, shifting the body out of "fight or flight" mode and promoting a calm state.
If something we do 16 times per minute on average has such a big impact on our health, it makes sense to invest in doing it better. Breathing strips are an effective, affordable, drug-free over-the-counter option to improve nasal breathing, particularly during sleep. Intake breathing strips are considered among the most advanced and powerful nasal dilator brands available. They use a two-part magnetic system that mechanically pulls and holds the nasal passages open, reducing airway resistance. Regular strips pull directly on the sensitive skin across the bridge of the nose, whereas Intake avoids bridge glue entirely to minimize irritation and red marks. Only the small side tabs are discarded after use, keeping the main magnetic band for future wear, reducing waste and cost.
From September 16 – October 20, Intake Breathing starter kits and tab refill packs are 15% off! For a deeper look into the benefits of learning proper breathing mechanics, we highly recommend the book Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art by James Nestor.

Round Up For Food Justice & Local Producer Subsidy Program (LPSP)

WHAT IS THE GBCFC ROUND UP PROGRAM ALL ABOUT?
Beginning in January of 2026, all Round Up donations will go to the Local Producer Subsidy Program (LPSP). LPSP is our version of the USDA Farm Bill, except instead of subsidizing billion-dollar corporate industrial farms - the ones that toxify the land, water, animals, and people - we are subsidizing our very own local farmers and ranchers. We are doing this so that we can pay these producers integrity pricing and still sell their goods on our shelves at affordable, market-competitive prices, making the most delicious and nutrient-dense foods more accessible for everyone.
Co-op shoppers can round up their change to the nearest dollar at the cash register after each purchase to donate to the program. There is also an option on the pinpad to contribute additional funds or larger amounts directly via the Friends of the Foodshed (FOTF) website. Note: all donations over $250 are tax-deductible. As of 2026, all of these Round Up Funds go back to the Local Producer Subsidy Program.
This month we will be using LPSP to subsidize:
🎃 Zucchini, Mexican squash, herbs, multiple varieties of cucumbers, Wild Violet corn on the cob, jalapeno and poblano peppers, Winter Luxury pumpkins, multiple varieties of hard winter squash, green beans, honeydew melons, cantaloupes, and watermelons from Alanis Farm (Fallon, Nevada)
🍅 Organic bunched chard, heirloom tomatoes, slicer tomatoes, and cherry tomato medleys from Holley Family Farms (Dayton, Nevada)
🥕 Organic mixed salad greens, kale, rosemary, and carrot bunches from Prema Farm (Bordertown, Nevada)
🌶️ Organic mini peppers and fingerling potatoes from Ripcord Farm (Washoe Valley, Nevada)
🌱 Organic herbs from Reno Food Systems (Reno, Nevada)
🫛 Organic green beans and crookneck squash from Custom Gardens (Silver Springs, NV)
🥬 Organic mixed lettuces, various greens, green cabbage, and Savoy cabbage from Sierra Valley Farms (Sierra Valley, CA)

🧄 Organic garlic from Jamason Farm (Battle Mountain, NV) and Mewaldt Farm (Fallon, NV)

Come in and check the shelves regularly for even more LPSP items!
