January 2025

Did You Know That West Coast Citrus Season is November through February?!
🍊 🍋 🍊 🍋🍊 🍋🍊 🍋🍊 🍋🍊 🍋🍊 🍋🍊 🍋🍊 🍋🍊 🍋

If you want to taste the most flavorful citrus grown on the West Coast, now is the time.  We've been working directly (hence the REGIONAL DIRECT indicator, see below) with Johansen Ranch in Orland, CA for nearly a decade. Johansen Ranch is a century-old certified organic family farm owned and operated by Mila, Olivia, and Rich Johansen. The family can trace their heritage in Nevada County to 1854!  Rich tends 48 acres of Satsuma trees planted by his dad and uncle in the 1960s in the town of Orland, California, 100 miles north of Sacramento in the northernmost citrus growing area in the world. Johansen owns and operates one of the last old-time citrus groves and runs his own packing house.
Johansen Ranch supplies our co-op with tasty mandarins, navel oranges, Meyer lemons, blood oranges, and when we are lucky - grapefruit! Check out the sales and new items below to see all of the fun items we're offering from this orchard
We
have a REGIONAL DIRECT relationship with Johansen Ranch.  Regional Direct products are grown or produced from our neighboring watershed within a 200-mile radius.  Regional Direct means that we have a direct relationship with the producers.

GF Meyer Lemon Mousse Cake 🤤

We recently collaborated with Chef Joshua Berreman to help us create an unforgettable dessert using the Johansen Ranch (Orland, CA) Meyer Lemons. Josh is a Reno native and has been "cheffing" all around this town, most notably under the esteemed Natalie Sellers, owner of the former 4th Street Bistro. 🙌 🧑‍🍳
To say that Josh's creation didn't disappoint would be an understatement.  These perfectly balanced Gluten-Free Meyer Lemon Mousse Cakes in a jar are the perfect tart and sweet balance.  The layers of sabayon, lemon mousse, and GF egg white cake drenched in a fresh Meyer lemon simple syrup are little bites of heaven. 🍋  💛

Local Holley Family Farms Pork is Back at the Foodshed Cafe!

If you missed last month's article about conventional pork versus the goodness you can only get from Holley Family Farms in Dayton, NV, then head to our website and read the full article so that you can truly appreciate our newest dishes in the Foodshed Cafe: Hogs and Kisses Sandwich and our Braised Pork Burrito with Chef Savannah Streeter's new salsa verde.

LOTS of new items at the co-op this month!

We've added dozens of new items to the co-op each week since 2025 started, hence the 25% OFF blowout sales in December.  Here's a little snippet of some of our favorite new products:
  • Housemade Kitchen Team relaunched the vegan tiramisu in a jar. They also created small sides of our housemade pole caught tuna salad (seed oil-free) and our vegan chickpea dill salad. Our housemade gingerade (organic fresh ginger, organic lemon juice, and organic maple syrup) is the newest to the case.  This is the perfect beverage for cold season, detox, and digestive warmth!
  • Grocery Team brought in DOZENS and DOZENS of new items they have been waiting to get the shelf space for: Bachan's Japanese BBQ sauces, Roots seed-oil-free frozen fries, 12+ wild seafood options, Creminelli salamis, Blackbird vegan pizzas, cat & dog treats, Purely Elizabeth cookie dough granola, Masienda Heirloom Blue and Yellow non-gmo Masa, dumplings, frozen burritos, vanilla paste, and so much more!
  • Local and regional direct beef is abundant, and we have ALL the best grass-fed & finished cuts in stock. Hulsman Ranch (Susanville, CA) will deliver more STEAKS and ground beef 🥩  on Thursday, Jan 30th. This ranch expands over 2,000 acres, and the cattle graze on the naturally occurring sedges, clover, and alfalfa. Hannah, the owner, describes her pastures as having a lot of sweet grass.  Every time that she checks water sources in her pasture, she nibbles on her grass to make sure that it's sweet and not bitter, which she says creates the excellent flavor of her beef. Our customers certainly agree since we can't keep Hulsman Ranch on our shelves!

Meyer Lemons from Johansen Ranch (Orland, CA) are on sale for $2.99/lb (normally $3.99/lb), through the end of the month or while supplies last.

♥️ Valentine's Goodies! ♥️

We have been so very in love with the entire Sunbeam Candles line.  They are beautiful, they burn a long time and they smell good! All of their candles are made from 100% pure beeswax and they use natural essential oils to create aromatherapy. 🥰🥰🥰. BONUS: All of Sunbeam's shipments are carbon neutral and contain ZERO PLASTIC 🕯️ 🩷🌷
If you haven’t done your research on the difference between beeswax candles and traditional paraffin candles, and you are looking to lead a more natural lifestyle with less toxins and carcinogens, definitely deep dive that one on the Internet.  For starters, beeswax candles are a natural, renewable and biodegradable option while paraffin candles are made from petroleum and are not biodegradable. 😢 🌍
