“Don't you understand that we need to be childish in order to understand? Only a child sees things with perfect clarity, because it hasn't developed all those filters which prevent us from seeing things that we don't expect to see.”
~Douglas Adams

ANNUAL LOVE YOUR FARMER DINNER!

Every year we love to celebrate the hardest working souls we get to work with - our local and regional farmers. For years we've sponsored our Annual Love Your Farmer Dinner, where we take the farmers away from their fields and their herds and their hives and get them all together to celebrate the life they create and the life they share by growing healthy food.
We feed them a nice dinner, we swap stories from past years, and we talk about how we can continue to grow our relationships with each other and with the land they so carefully cultivate. There's a lot of laughter and an ever present reminder of how precious our soil is, and how precious the people who tend it are. We are so lucky to have now more than a hundred local and regional farmers, ranchers, apiarists, orchardists, herbalists, wildcrafters, woodworkers, coffee roasters, brewers, and kitchens to celebrate. These people grow more than food, they grow community.
Thank you to all our lovely local farmers!

We love supporting local farms. We also love coffee - it helps us spend more time supporting local farms :) What we love most of all, though, is local coffeeshops supporting local farms. Coffeebar Reno already goes above and beyond in their sourcing (check out their bean-to-cup support of small-holder coffee farmers and cooperatives thanks to their partnership with Vertical Roasters), and they just stepped their game up in a big way. That's right, they are making the switch to certified organic pasture raised eggs from ! We are so excited to be able to share this news with everyone - Coffeebar already has amazing baked goods and meals, and knowing that they are taking the important steps to support local producers and offer more nutritious pasture-raised eggs to their customers is a big win for the local food system. Organic and pasture raised eggs have more Vitamin A, Beta-Carotene, and Vitamin E than their barn-raised grain-fed counterparts. Plus, supporting local and regional farmers keeps rural areas strong and circulates money in the Nevadan economy. Oh yeah, and the flavor...
Seriously, they are using a quality of ingredients typically reserved for the fanciest Bay Area restaurants, but you won't have to dip into your child's college fund or make a reservation three months in advance to try their amazing burritos, toasts, and pastries. These decisions are not made lightly, so take the time to go celebrate with Coffeebar and thank them for moving Reno's food system in the right direction!

WOW! What a Co-op we own! So many fantastic things are happening.
We just had the annual seedling sale and it was incredible. Nearly every farmer was sold out by 11am and the Co-op itself was at full capacity all day.
The official grand opening of the Food Shed (our very own café ) was super successful too and so much fun. I hope you all got a chance to taste one of the free cookies that were being handed out and maybe, my favorite, the cauliflower walnut burrito. You all helped make it the best sales day in the history of the Co-op. THANK YOU!!!
Coming up in June is a free farmer training workshop, put on by family farmed up at Pipers Opera House in Virginia City. This will be a great opportunity for operators of vegetable farms of any size to get useful, practical, profit-making guidance on how to achieve the highest quality produce for sale.
I must mention too, that every year, the Co-op funds a very special dinner, just for our farmers. It’s the Love Your Farmer Dinner. It is a way to honor the farmers who grow and produce so many of the wonderful items we have at the Co-op. As a farmer and the seedling grower of Four Dog Farm, I have had the opportunity to be a guest at this special event, and I must say, I am so very grateful for our Co-op and all that they stand for. The love and respect they have for our local community and the farmers and producers who serve this community is truly from the heart.
So, in closing, thank you all, current members, future members and friends, for making our Co-op such a special place!
With deep appreciation,
David Funk
One of your Co-op board members and grower of seedlings at Four Dog Farm
