Holiday Gift Card Deal!
$10 OFF a $100 Gift Card

Welcome to that time of year where the holidays pack themselves together like too many chickpea salads on the buffet table at a solstice potluck dinner. Thanksgiving is barely over, yet Hanukkah has already started, Christmas is right around the corner, and somehow we still have New Years happening right after that!
If you're worried about finding a good gift for your friends, family, or pets, don't worry - we are too.
The easy solution, of course, is a co-op gift card! These little beauties are versatile, reusable, and give people what we all know we want the most - good, clean, organic food. Whether people are looking for fair trade chocolate, organic smoothies, a quick burrito when they don't have time to make their own lunch, a fancy new (organic) co-op sweater, or that kombucha starter kit they've always wanted to try, a co-op gift card is the way to give that special communal gift - the sharing of good food.
So for the holidays we are offering $100 co-op gift cards for $90, and $50 co-op gift cards for only $45!!! Come by the store and get yours today!
WIN $75 IN GROCERIES!

for a chance to win $75 worth of co-op basics groceries!

That's right, every day you come into the store you get one entry into a random draw raffle to win some groceries from our basics program, which is designed to help create affordable access to organic food.
In the spirit of affordable food, if you win we will ALSO donate $75 to the Reno Initiative for Shelter and Equality (RISE) in your name! RISE is a local non-profit that does great work in the community, providing meals, housing, and education to people in need - they put it best themselves:
"RISE uses housing assistance, relationships, quality food, and education to connect neighbors with neighbors and tackle the issues we face as a community."
For more info, check out their volunteer page, or make a donation, and stop by the store TODAY to get your first entry into the raffle!

LOCAL FIBERSHED HOLLEY YARN!
Daniel Holley of Holley Family Farms has been raising wool sheep and learning the surprisingly difficult and disappearing art of shearing sheep in anticipation of building a local fibershed in Northern Nevada.
Don't know what a fibershed is? Simple - we're all about local food here, and more and more people are embracing the ethics of local, but as we all know, clothes production is a global industry that has found plenty of ways to cut corners in fair labor and safety.
The way to change that is to embrace locally made clothes, from locally produced fibers, like wool from Holley Family Farms! This is a big undertaking, and can be significantly more expensive than clothing made in a sweatshop in Thailand, but by rejecting our throwaway culture, fixing old clothes, and embracing quality materials, we can choose to wear with pride.
So come to the co-op and let's start creating a fibershed together!

LOCAL BODY CARE GETS BEAUTIFIED
While shopping for locally produced deodorant, hypoallergenic creams, beautiful handmade soap, or any number of body care products, many people turn towards one of our favorite local body care lines: Tober's Traditions.
Sharp members might have already noticed that Tober's Traditions has undergone a rebrand and is now called Nature's Complement! But don't worry, they still have the same logo, the same carefully chosen ingredients, and are still made LOCALLY here in Reno!
If you aren't familiar with these locally produced goodies, try them out! Seriously, your skin, lips, body, face, teeth, or whatever else needs attention on your body will benefit from these hypoallergenic body care products. In fact, the company was started specifically for people with sensitive skin and skin allergies, so they are great for everyone.

Check out Mountain Mushrooms,
our only local mushroom farm!

Sure, Nate from Mountain Mushrooms

grows amazing oysters and shiitakes on organic substrates, and sure, they're fresher than anything else you can get by a long shot. Oh, and did we mention that mushrooms are one of the healthiest foods you can eat, full of selenium, Vitamin D, fiber, iron, and a whole lotta that newest flavor profile, umami, which gives so many foods that rich, savory flavor we all crave?
But mushrooms aren't the only thing happening out at Nate's ranch - check this video out to see what it looks like when a farmer dreams big for him/herself AND for the greater community! Anyone who has ever farmed on a small scale before will relate to this vision.

Sustainable Food and Farm Conference in Nevada City!

Annual Sustainable Food and Farm Conference
February 9-11 2018!

Every year, one of our favorite regionally based farm education nonprofits, Sierra Harvest

, hosts the Sustainable Food and Farm Conference in Nevada City, CA.
This is easily one of the best farm conferences in the country, and is right down the road from us! It is a great opportunity for farmers and non-farmers alike, with farm tours, and three exceptional speakers. Last year we were lucky to get to see soil scientist Dr. Elaine Ingham, and this year the conference is headlined by none other than revolutionary farmer Joel Salatin of Polyface farm, who is known not only for inspiring a new generation of farmers, but for preaching the values of closed loop regenerative farming, while offering common sense insights into our dysfunctional food system. Plus, Daphne Miller will be there to explain the benefits of soil microbes to our own health, and the Kaisers of Singing Frogs Farm will be explaining the value of agroecology and no-till farming.
We highly recommend this conference to anyone even remotely interested in learning more about food systems and the small scale sustainable agriculture that we embrace here at the co-op! Join some of our local farms and broaden your knowledge of our ever important local food systems.
