Asparagus is a long-lived plant like a tree in two ways:
1. Plant it where it won't end up in the way
2. Put a $10 tree in a $100 hole.
Other considerations:
Plant in full sun with 18" spacing in soil with good drainage. Water as needed to keep soil moist, but not constantly soaking wet. In the fall when the ferns have died off, cut the dead ferns to the ground.
Since asparagus is a long lived plant, you'll want to give it a good foundation to provide you with many years of plentiful harvests. We suggest not harvesting any asparagus next year to allow the plant to make itself at home. Let the ferns grow to their fullest without any interference. This is hard; we know. Your patience will pay off! The following year, when the ferns start to show in the spring time, harvest the ferns when they are approximately 8" tall for up to two weeks. To harvest, cut the ferns just below the soil level. You may find yourself harvesting twice a day during those two weeks (once in the morning and once in the evening). For the following years, you can harvest the ferns for 5-6 weeks. After your harvest window, again, allow the ferns to grow to their fullest and cut to the ground in the fall when the ferns have died. Patience is key and you reap what you sow!
